Dive head first into the best of Portugal’s culture, history and cuisine with a holiday to Porto City. This ancient port city dates back to the Romans and you’ll see evidence of its rich history around every corner. It's a mix of narrow winding lanes, twisting staircases and grand churches. Medieval landmarks are sandwiched side-by-side with modern buildings, particularly in the buzzing UNESCO-listed Ribeira district. Get a glimpse of the fortress-like Se Cathedral, Casa do Infante, Church of San Francisco and the waterfront Ribeira Square. They’ll definitely whet your appetite to visit one of Porto’s many museums. If you want to do more on your Portugal holiday than just lie on the beach, then Porto is the place for you.

Your Porto City questions, answered

Tripe, bean and vegetable stew served with rice is a local favourite, as is francesinha - a meaty sandwich topped with a rich cheese sauce.
While there are no beaches in the city itself, the fine sands of Espinho coastal resort are less than 24km away and easily reached by train.
Live music venues and arty bars can be found around Ribeira. For the trendiest nightclubs, head to the posh suburb of Foz do Douro.
