Gaia Breaks

HISTORIC CELLARS AND GOLDEN SKIES!

Just across the Douro River from Porto, Gaia is a haven of tranquillity. Whether you’re savouring its culinary wonders, delving into its rich history, or simply unwinding by the water, Gaia offers the perfect Porto escape.

Kick off your day with a leisurely stroll along the Cais de Gaia, the bustling riverfront promenade. The views of Porto’s terracotta rooftops across the river are postcard-worthy, and the riverside cafés are perfect if you want to linger with a glass of chilled Vinho Verde.

For a bird’s-eye perspective, hop on the Gaia Cable Car, which glides over the city and offers sweeping views of the Dom Luís I Bridge and the river below.

Of course, Gaia is synonymous with port wine, and its cellars are world-famous. Book a tour at Taylor’s, Graham’s, or Sandeman, and discover the art of winemaking while savouring samples of tawny, ruby, or vintage port.

When hunger strikes, Gaia is ready to delight your taste buds. Dive into traditional Portuguese classics like bacalhau à brás, featuring the region’s celebrated salted cod, or savour the indulgent layers of a hearty Francesinha sandwich. And, of course, no meal in Gaia is complete without a glass of locally crafted wine.

Fancy a seaside escape? Gaia’s beaches, like the lovely Praia de Lavadores, are just a 15-minute cab ride from the city centre. But if you’re up for stretching your legs, why not take the scenic route? A stroll along the Douro River lets you soak up the area’s charm, offering picturesque views and a glimpse into the local way of life.

As the day winds down, watch the sunset from the Serra do Pilar Monastery, and see the sky transform into a kaleidoscope of pink, gold, and orange – an ideal prelude to an evening in Gaia.

Then head up to one of the neighbourhood’s fantastic rooftop bars, where you can sip on a glass of port or local wine while enjoying views of Porto and its lights shimmering across the Douro River.
