Rhodes Holidays

A Greek island paradise

With a glorious 137-mile coastline, Rhodes – the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands – is a beach lover’s dream. But while its golden sands and striking pebble shores, bathed in sun for some 300 days of the year, are undeniably intoxicating, Rhodes holidays aren’t just about sun, sea and sand. It’s a place that suits history buffs and water sports fanatics just as well as couples or families on sandcastle-building missions.

Rhodes’ medieval old town, where the Byzantines, Greeks and Venetians have all left their mark, is thick with history, and the atmospheric ancient cities of Kamiros and Ialyssos are well worth a visit. Holidays to Rhodes also offer masses of opportunities to get out into nature on an adventure. Hiking trails criss-cross the island, and you can meander along coastal paths, through olive groves and flower-filled meadows to crumbling ancient monasteries.

Head to Rhodes’ interior and soak up the views from the top of its highest mountain, sip wine on a vineyard tour or stroll through a valley filled with butterflies. Once you’re done adventuring, retreat to a traditional taverna or a cool contemporary restaurant and dine on Greek food galore, followed by cocktails in a trendy bar. Bringing together ancient history with the best that nature has to offer, whether you’re a group of pals or a family looking for adventure, Rhodes has something for you.

Your Rhodes questions, answered

For bars and restaurants within walking distance of each other, your best bet is Rhodes Town – you’ll find wine, craft beer bars and cool speakeasies. For clubs, hit Faliraki.
Families will be in their element, with plenty of sandy beaches and shallow water. There are also excellent water parks, go-karting courses and crazy golf.
Rhodes is famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, clear skies, and crystal blue water. If you're looking for an idyllic getaway, try the hidden beaches near Glyfada and Paleochora. These gorgeous little coves are well off the beaten track. You won't find any plastic parasols and rows of sun-loungers here. They're perfect places to escape the crowds and get back in touch with nature. Elli beach is just a short walk from Rhodes town centre. It's well-organised and family-friendly with all the amenities you need. But it does get busy during peak tourist season. Arrive early for the best spots.
July and August are the hottest months, so if sunbathing isn’t your main draw, try springtime – the weather will be warm and you can revel in the outdoors.
Rhodes City, on the northern tip of the island, is the ideal destination for couples, honeymooners, and maturer travellers. You can explore the cobblestone streets of the old town. Just walking around this beautiful quarter is like taking a journey back in time. You'll discover ancient ruins, Byzantine churches, and quaint backstreets that don't even have names. Or spend an afternoon at the beautiful beaches, all within walking distance of the town centre. The nightlife is chilled and laid-back around the old town. This is a place for romantic evening meals and a few glasses of wine on the terrace.
Stegna is a small peaceful resort on the Island's east coast. It's around a 45-minute drive from Rhodes and the party-town Faliraki. But you'll feel like you've arrived in a different world. This picturesque bay has less than 500 permanent residents, creating an authentic village atmosphere. Time moves slower in Stegna, making it the perfect place to unwind, relax, and clear your mind. Tucked away on the south-west coast, Monolithos is another hidden gem and the archetypal Mediterranean village. Expect stone white houses and family-run hotels, romantic tavernas, pebble beaches, olive groves, and stunning coastal views.
Rhodes is an excellent base for an island-hopping holiday. Most of the nearby islands are just an hour away by ferry. Halki is a popular destination for island hoppers. You'll see small fishing boats bobbing in the harbour as you arrive. Then spend a morning exploring the local markets before grabbing some lunch in the waterside restaurants. Try the mezze platters. Halki has a reputation for producing delicious feta cheese, flatbread, and souvlaki. Pondamos beach is a 10-minute walk from town. Even during peak tourist season, there's a good chance you'll have it all to yourself.
Rhodes caters to all holiday budgets. A three-course meal in mid-range restaurants costs €40. If you go for a few drinks after, you'll pay around €3-5 for draft beer or a glass of wine. You can get lunch at a budget restaurant for €10 per person. Alternatively, the bigger towns and popular tourist spots have plenty of fast-food joints or delis where you can grab a burger or sandwich meal for €6. Morning coffee and a croissant are just €3. Self-caterers can pick up a full basket of shopping from the local supermarkets for around €30.
Rhodes is one of the most beautiful Greek islands. And it has something for everyone. History lovers can tour fascinating Greek ruins, including the ancient Olympic stadium that once hosted chariot races and gladiator battles. Or explore the medieval towns dating back to the first century. Active holidaymakers will love walking through the idyllic Rhodes countryside. You'll see olive groves, lemon farms, and magnificent coastal views. Keep your eyes peeled for the bearded goats and other furry creatures, including rabbits and weasels. But don't worry if all this trekking sounds like hard work. Almost all the beaches on Rhodes have picture-postcard views. So just lay back and enjoy.
