"I really wanted to love Aloe Hotel, but unfortunately I feel I need to warn others about our experience, particularly anyone considering booking a short stay here. I read a few reviews similar to this, but didn’t think it would actually happen to us!
We booked directly with Aloe Hotel, paying just under €700 for just four nights. After travelling overnight for a 6am flight and being awake since around 1am, we arrived at Aloe looking forward to finally starting our holiday.
Instead, we were told that our room was suddenly “under maintenance” and that we could not stay at the hotel that night. We were sent to their sister hotel, Castellum Suites, around half an hour away.
The replacement accommodation was absolutely not somewhere we would have chosen to stay. We found the standard and cleanliness extremely poor and had to spend the first night of our four-night holiday there before packing everything up again the following morning and travelling back to Aloe.
We were told to return to Aloe the next morning, yet when we arrived our room still wasn’t ready and we weren’t able to get into it until around 12pm.
Given that our room supposedly couldn’t be used the previous day because of “maintenance”, but then still wasn’t available until an hour after normal check-in time the following day, we were left seriously questioning whether maintenance was ever actually the issue. After subsequently reading other reviews mentioning guests being moved elsewhere, we strongly suspected that the hotel had overbooked. We also spoke to other guests staying at the same time as us who told us they had experienced the same issue, and there are other reviews online describing guests being relocated.
What disappointed us even more was the hotel’s response when we asked for a refund for the one night of our four-night booking that they were unable to accommodate us at Aloe. They refused.
Instead, we were told we could either keep an all-inclusive upgrade or upgrade to a pool room. Neither addressed the issue for us. We hadn’t booked all-inclusive because we wanted to go out, eat locally and had already budgeted for this. We also didn’t particularly want a pool room – we’d deliberately chosen to use the main pool because we enjoy the social atmosphere, and reviews had already made us aware that some private pools can be shaded/cool.
On such a short four-night holiday, losing the first night and then spending part of the following morning moving hotels again is a significant amount of your trip.
The most frustrating part is that had we been contacted beforehand and honestly told there was a problem, we could have made an informed decision. Instead, we arrived exhausted in Rhodes believing we had four nights at Aloe, only to find that wasn’t the case.
My advice: if you’re considering booking Aloe, particularly for a short stay, read the reviews mentioning guests being relocated very carefully. Based on our experience, I would also contact the hotel shortly before travelling and ask them to confirm that your room will actually be available (not that you should have to do this…).
It’s a real shame because we specifically chose Aloe and were genuinely excited to stay here. Unfortunately, a beautiful-looking hotel doesn’t make up for losing part of a short holiday, the stress and disruption of being moved between hotels, and the way the situation was handled."
