Marmaris has it all going on. The liveliest resort on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast is a heady mix of traditional Turkish culture, relaxed beach life and buzzing nightlife. Popular with families, couples and party-loving groups, this historic town is truly alive and kicking. With a backdrop of rugged mountains, pine forests and miles of palm-lined beaches, Marmaris is quite the beauty. Add in a charming old town, an Ottoman castle and a glitzy marina and you won’t be short of a photo opportunity or two!
By day, Marmaris boasts a thriving beach life – with watersports and plenty of friendly beach cafes and bars. Away from the sands, you can indulge in some pampering at an authentic Turkish hammam, haggle in the Grand Bazaar or head to a water park. You could even hop on a boat to the nearby Greek island of Rhodes. By night, enjoy some of Turkey’s best nightlife with everything from rooftop cocktail bars to wild all-night clubs.
The family-friendly beach resort of Icmeler is situated around a large, sheltered bay whose calm waters are ideal for young children to splash around in. Lined by palm trees and cafes and backed by dramatic mountains, this is a beautiful spot for some beach time. There’s a great selection of watersports on offer from pedalos to diving. By night, the town is laid-back but lively with a good choice of bars and restaurants.
The small village of Turunc still has that sleepy fishing village vibe. Its tranquil setting is one of the prettiest around, with views of the Taurus mountains from a Blue Flag beach. Stroll around the picturesque harbour, browse the bustling market or simply laze on the beach and enjoy the view. Perfect for anyone who wants a quiet getaway.
The chilled out river town of Dalyan is most famous for its loggerhead turtles. Head down to Iztuzu beach to catch a glimpse of these amazing creatures, who gather during the summer months to lay their eggs in the sand. A visit to the turtle sanctuary is a great way to learn more about protecting this endangered species. Dalyan also does fantastic river boat trips. Cruise upstream to discover the area’s lakes, mud baths and ancient Lycian rock tombs. If you’re looking for romance, you can’t beat a moonlit boat ride.
The Dancing Fountains
A mesmerising light show is set to music every night at 9 pm. The fountains are in the middle of a large square surrounded by cosy cafes and restaurants. Take a seat outdoors to catch the show with a drink or venture up for a closer look. This is a big hit with families.
Atlantis Water Park
Marmaris has a few water parks to choose from but the biggest and best is Atlantis Water Park, located right on the beachfront. Not only does it have slides, flumes and pools to satisfy kids, and adults of course, of all ages, there’s plenty of other activities too – from mini golf to bowling. When you want to dry out, head to the park’s private beach or grab some refreshments in one of the tasty restaurants.
Marmaris Castle and Museum
The grand Ottoman castle at Marmaris is the kind you’d imagine knights defending from dragons in your childhood fantasies. Thought to date back to 1044BC, it has been restored over the years and is still in amazing condition. Explore the turrets, visit the onsite museum and enjoy panoramic views out across the bay.
Marmaris Bay is home to two excellent beaches that stretch all the way round to meet the beach at neighbouring Icmeler. Marmaris Urban Beach is the liveliest spot, lying close to the centre of town. It’s a fun sandy beach with lots of bars and restaurants lining the promenade. Next to that is Uzunyali Beach (or Long Beach), 10km of golden sand that continues right along the coast to Icmeler. The waters here are calm and warm, ideal for watersports. From banana boats to water-skiing, the Marmaris beaches are fairly action-packed!
Traditional Turkish dishes blend Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours to create some seriously tasty food. Some of our favourites include the authentic Turkish kebabs cooked over charcoal flames, ‘pide’ flatbreads or Turkish pizzas topped with a variety of ingredients, and the giant mezze sharing platters – perfect for trying a little bit of everything. If you have a sweet tooth we recommend the sticky baklava topped with pistachios or the unusual Turkish ice cream. And not forgetting the Turkish delight of course!
As you’d expect for a resort of this size, Marmaris boasts a wide range of dining options. Want a special romantic night of fine dining under the stars? No problem. Looking for tasty eats on the go? There’s loads of cheap and cheerful options. Marmaris offers a selection of restaurants covering everything from authentic Turkish cuisine to Italian, Indian, Chinese and British food. Head down to the marina for some of the best eateries – and those gorgeous views of the Mediterranean.
Holidays to Marmaris are the perfect balance of relaxation and excitement. You’ve got fantastic beaches and the Turkish hammams to help you unwind but you’ve also got plenty to keep boredom at bay. Water parks, interesting history, all the watersports, bustling bazaars – and that legendary Marmaris nightlife.
