"Holiday Inn Westhill
I’ve used this hotel a number of times over the years, for work and leisure. It’s ideally situated just off the Aberdeen bypass, giving easy access to rural Aberdeenshire, yet only a 20-25 minute drive to the city centre. The rates are certainly favourable compared to a hotel in the city centre, particularly with free parking factored in. There are several supermarkets nearby, 2 only a short walk away, and several restaurants. On this occasion the stay was for castle-bagging, so perfectly situated.
There was a wedding on when I arrived at around 20:30, yet still spaces left in the car park (remember to log your registration number on the tablet at reception).
The car park is looking a bit neglected – a lot of weeds growing and the wooden surround for the beer garden could do with a lick of paint.
Check-in was quick with a friendly, helpful receptionist. Two lifts. Both working, giving easy access to my room on the third floor.
The room felt a bit dated but was clean enough and with air conditioning. Ample storage for a couple of nights. The room wasn’t cramped but with the sofa bed set up for my son, this did impact on space.
There was room for a fridge, but none there. The desk area had task lighting and would be fine for work, however the chair was the wrong height for sitting at a laptop for any extended period. There were sockets on the workstation but initially I couldn’t see any beside the bed, however there were some at floor level behind the bedside tables. Not ideal and none had USB sockets.
There was a large television and a decent amount of channels. There was wifi but I had a strong 5G signal, so had no need to use it.
The bed wasn't the most comfortable I've slept in. The pillows were pretty done and although they had pillow protectors, both pillow protector and pillow slip were on the same way, leaving the pillow exposed.
The bathroom looked as if it had been refurbished more recently, with a bath/ shower and a huge work surface for setting out toiletries. The large mirror was mist-free, which is always a bonus. The only downside was the amount of black mould on the shower tiles, which wasn’t immediately noticeable due to the grey grout. It was all over, not just confined to one small area. No excuse for this with modern cleaning materials.
Breakfast was typical continental and cooked buffet with a fair selection. The (only) toaster, like most hotels, produced toast that was either mildly warmed bread or charcoal. There was also only one coffee machine, which wasn’t enough, even when the breakfast room was quiet. There were very few condiments and only one bottle of each on offer, which again wasn’t sufficient. The selections were never allowed to run out during the mornings I had breakfast.
On the first morning I went to use the toilets in the restaurant before heading off for the day. They were repulsive! They clearly hadn’t been cleaned that morning and had no toilet paper. In fairness, this is the first time I’ve come across this issue at this hotel after a number of stays.
Restaurant toilets aside, this was an okay stay. I would recommend it and I would probably stay again if the price was right. I’d give this a 7 out of 10, which I’ve rounded up to 4 for the Trip Advisor scale."
