"This is the 5th time we have visited Santa Susanna, but the first time since it has been taken over by Fergus.
The first thing to say is that this is a budget resort, the price you pay reflects what you get; one of the biggest issues is the number of people constantly complaining about the hotel, staff, amenities, food, pool... we've paid a higher price & been to more luxurious resorts, but on a budget this resort is more than ample.
Since Fergus took over, there have been noticeable changes, not necessarily positive ones, for example the pool bar used to service alcohol, but now only serves snacks and self-serve soft drinks, meaning that there is only one bar which serves alcohol, sometimes resulting in queues. Ice poles have also been removed from the snack menu on the all inclusive and the ice creams now come at an additional, very expensive charge, however there is a supermarket across the car park.
The variety of food in the dining room has also decreased, we have always found the food to be very good, even with two children, but there has previously been "specials" of mussels, fish paella, salmon which have now been replaced by mostly vegetarian pasta dishes, which are delicious, but quite samey. The quality, taste and availability of the food has always been good, despite what some reviews say, there is something for everyone, including full English options at breakfast.
The pool is great, although there are broken grates and tiles which could do with some investment to repair, there are also far fewer available sunbeds than in previous years.
One of the most noticeable changes is the lack of staff, in previous years there were far more bar, dining room and cleaning staff, it seems like this has been downsized & the pool, terrace area is not always clean by the next day, while room cleaners only made the beds, but didn't sweep/mop the floors in the room and balcony as they have done in previous years.
One of the highlights however, is the improvement in entertainment; the animation team used to be quite disappointing, but now Alberto is exceptional at running events and competitions throughout the day & little kids were entertained in the evening with party dances.
The bar/dining room staff are friendly and helpful and the area is amazing with a shuttle bus running to and from the town every half an hour (although it's easily walkable).
The beach, restaurants, bars are excellent and the supermarket/ shopping centre across the car park is really handy to have so close.
We would definitely return for a 6th time, the kids have always loved going and Gerona airport is only about 20 minutes away, its a perfect place for a budget holiday, as long as you don't expect the Ritz for the price of a Travelodge!"
