Culture in an elegant Italian city
Lecce in southern Puglia is often referred to as the ‘Florence of the South’ thanks to its rich, Baroque, architectural monuments. Sun-warmed, pale-gold buildings line the city centre and its narrow lanes are paved with cobblestones and marble. The city’s most distinctive architecture dates from the 17th century, when the region became rich on the proceeds of olive oil, and the local stone on the outside of buildings was carved into incredibly ornate Baroque decoration.
However, this is not just a gorgeous-looking city – on Lecce holidays you’ll also find that this laid-back yet buzzy place makes a wonderful base for exploration. There are so many restaurants, pizzerias and bars to choose from – it’s a university city, so it caters to a young crowd for most of the year, as well as summer tourists. Explore picturesque streets, sip cocktails in a piazza, eat outstanding ice cream and enjoy sampling delicious local cuisine – holidays to Lecce have all this to offer, and more.
