Cultural stay in Lecce

With culture and history in spades, the Baroque city of Lecce is a great spot for your next Italian adventure. Mercure President Lecce is in the newer part of the city, surrounded with shops, cafés and restaurants, but still within walking distance of the Old Town.

Drop your bags and head straight out into the streets of Lecce. The best way to see the city is with a relaxed stroll – there are no schedules here. Wander past the classic Baroque architecture to the Roman Amphitheatre, about 15 minutes’ walk from the hotel. The Basilica di Sante Croce, with its intricate façade is well worth a visit, too. See what hidden gems you can discover down the cobbled streets – there’s plenty of quirky shops and boutiques to be found selling everything from jewellery and crafts to local olive oil.

It’s no secret that the Italians know how to do food, and Lecce is no exception. While you’re there make sure to indulge in the signature pasticciotto – a custard-filled pastry. Breakfast at the hotel is buffet-style, and while you’re out and about there’ll be no shortage of cafés and restaurants serving up classic Italian fare. Enjoy an evening drink at the hotel bar or stay out late into the night soaking up the atmosphere – the choice is yours.

Find out more about Lecce

Lecce in southern Puglia is often referred to as the ‘Florence of the South’ thanks to its rich, Baroque, architectural monuments. Sun-warmed, pale-gold buildings line the city centre and its narrow lanes are paved with cobblestones and marble. The city’s most distinctive architecture dates from the 17th century, when the region became rich on the proceeds of olive oil, and the local stone on the outside of buildings was carved into incredibly ornate Baroque decoration.
