Where Crete gets wonderfully wild
Chania’s one of those parts of Crete that keeps changing the view on you, in a good way. One minute you’ve got turquoise lagoons and pink-tinged sand, the next it’s rugged gorges, mountain roads and little villages where lunch somehow turns into the whole afternoon. This is western Crete at full stretch, with famous beaches like Balos, Falasarna and Elafonisi sharing the map with hiking country, traditional inland spots, and a coastline that knows exactly how to show off.
What makes the wider Chania region such a good shout is the range. It’s not just about the harbour or old town, lovely though those are. You can head south for wilder beaches and quieter coastal villages, go inland for mountain scenery and local tavernas, or take on the Samaria Gorge if your holiday style includes dramatic landscapes and very earned dinner afterwards. It’s a region that works just as well for lazy beach days as it does for proper exploring.
Beyond the headline-makers, Chania has loads of corners worth getting to know. Kissamos is a handy jumping-off point for Balos and Gramvousa, while Paleochora has a laid-back south-coast feel that’s great for beach days with a slower rhythm. Sougia is another good shout if you’re after peace, pebbly swims and a more low-key base, while Vamos and Apokoronas bring a more traditional inland-Crete feel, with village squares, mountain views and tavernas that make lingering very easy. Then there’s Sfakia, all dramatic scenery and wild beauty, for anyone who likes their holiday with a little more edge.
Chania’s a great shout if you like your holidays varied, scenic and full of choice. Go for the beaches, stay for the variety, and let west Crete keep surprising you.
