"My three friends and I checked into Novotel Paris 17 on 19 June. Our initial check-in was pleasant, but the rest of our experience was extremely concerning and disappointing.
One of my friends had brought a very expensive pair of shoes with her. She did not wear them on the evening we arrived, the following day or on the Sunday. On the second day of our stay, we left the hotel at around 2pm. When we later returned, we were told that our room could not be cleaned because the housekeeping staff had already finished for the day.
The following morning, when my friend went to wear the shoes, we realised they were no longer in the room. We searched everywhere, turned the room upside down and checked every bag, cupboard and possible location, but they had disappeared.
We immediately reported this to reception and asked the hotel to investigate who had entered our room. The electronic door records showed that the housekeeping manager had accessed our room after we left at around 2pm.
The hotel later claimed that CCTV showed the housekeeping manager briefly opening the door and looking inside to check whether the room had been cleaned. This explanation made no sense to us because the room was not cleaned afterwards. We could not understand why an occupied guest room needed to be accessed simply to look inside, especially when we had been told that housekeeping had already finished.
When we explained the situation to the front-desk staff, they were rude, blunt, discouraging and completely unsympathetic. Instead of showing concern or reassuring us that the matter would be properly investigated, they blamed us for not putting the shoes in the safe. A pair of shoes would not reasonably fit inside a hotel safe, and guests should not be made to feel responsible when belongings disappear from a room that hotel staff have accessed.
The disappearance of our belongings was serious enough, but the rude and dismissive attitude of the front-desk staff made the situation even worse. We were treated as though we were at fault rather than guests reporting missing property from a room that hotel staff had accessed.
Despite the hotel confirming that a member of housekeeping management had entered our room, there appeared to be no serious or transparent investigation. There was no meaningful search for the shoes, no clear explanation and no practical support. We were simply told to report the matter to the police.
Unfortunately, the police were not very helpful, partly because of the language barrier, and appeared only to file the report.
After returning to our home country, I also discovered that my leather card holder was missing. It contained all of my bank cards, loyalty cards and membership cards. My ID was the only item not inside because I had removed it before going out.
We have since contacted customer service and escalated the matter to senior management, but we have received no satisfactory resolution or meaningful support.
I cannot personally prove who removed the missing belongings. However, the facts are that valuable items disappeared from our room, the hotel’s own records confirmed that a member of housekeeping management entered while we were away, and the hotel failed to conduct what we considered to be a proper investigation."
