"Just come back from a week at this lovely hotel. Upon arrival, there was an efficient check-in with lots of details about the hotel and surrounding area.
The hotel complex is made up of many different buildings and it's worth knowing that many of these buildings do not have a lift. Ok, it's only up one level on a turned marble staircase but carrying suitcases up to the next floor may be a struggle for some.
We had booked a 2 bedroom apartment (no. 263).
Upon entering the property, there is a bathroom with shower over the bath and a fixed hairdryer and a downstairs double/twin bedroom. Loads of storage space. Outside shutters, full length opening window with voile to stop flies when the window is open. TV with only 1 usable UK channel (BBC1).
Up another flight of turned stairs and there is a big open living area. Kitchen is well-equipped with toaster, microwave, kettle etc. a complimentary bottle of water had been left on the dining table. There is a shower room with a good size walk in shower. Body wash provided and a bar of hand soap. No complimentary hair products. Fixed hairdryer.
The wardrobe for the upstairs bedroom is in the living area. Good size and enough room for 2 people's clothes with shelving and hangers. In the bedroom there are 2 single beds pushed together. Bedside cabinets with 1 drawer in each and a dressing table with TV above, again only 1 usable UK channel. There is only 1 mirror and that is in the bathroom. There is no mirror in living area or bedroom.
In the living area there is a large sofa and another pull-out, both which can be used as extra beds. There are lightweight duvets provided if needed.
The balconies - wow! There is a large balcony spanning the width of the apartment with small clothes airer and table with 4 chairs. It's a really good sized balcony, length and width wise. It overlooks the gardens and you get to see beautiful sunrises from here. You can also see the sea between the trees. Off the kitchen there is another small door leading off to yet another really good sized balcony. This one overlooks the quiet street.
Now, the beds. If you enjoy sleeping on rock hard mattresses then you will sleep well, otherwise they are not comfy beds. I ended up sleeping on one of the sofas which were much comfier. My friend ended up using the duvets as mattress toppers. We found out upon check-out that you can actually request mattress toppers if needed. So I would definitely recommend these.
The bed spreads had a few pulls in them which looked a bit untidy. The rooms were very clean and there is air conditioning on both floors which you could control separately. All doors on both floors need to be shut for the air conditioning to work. On arrival ours wasn't working. We phoned reception and within 5 mins Marco had arrived and had it fixed within 15 mins.
We had booked B&B and paid an extra 25 Euros a couple of times for the evening meals too (doesn't include drinks).
Food was excellent. Loads of variety. Always hot. Friendly efficient staff - shout out to Holiver and Javier who were always very friendly and worked hard as did all the employees. No complaints about the restaurant at all.
Outside, the gardens are beautiful and well kept. The pool is huge and very clean. There is a pool bar with quiet music playing and an extensive snack/drinks menu. I think this is open 12 til 15.30 but not definite on those times. There are loads of sunbeds and more stacked up if needed in the busier months. The pool area is quiet, the water temperature is a little cooler than the sea and there is also a smaller pool for little kiddies. The large pool starts off very shallow at one end so it is easy to access. Towels are available to hire from reception for a refundable 10 euros.
We didn't use the spa so can't comment. The indoor pool looked a good size.
Entertainment is ok. Vinnie worked really hard throughout our visit. He was children's entertainer, aqua erobic instructor, bingo caller, pop quiz DJ, a genuinely nice guy who spoke 5 different languages There was a singer on one night, which we missed and also a guy playing electric violin. He was great. I just wished they'd turn the lights down a little in the evening to give the room by a bit more ambience. It was lacking a bit of atmosphere.
The beach is a very short 5 minute stroll, either from the road or along the path from the rear of the hotel. You can request parasols from reception at no extra cost to use on the beach. The small beach is beautiful. White soft sand and boardered by rocks either side. Sunbeds cost 21 euros for 2 and there is a fixed parasol with 1 hook to hang bags from. The sea is beautiful and clear with loads of fish which swim by and sometimes you can feel them on your legs which is a bit of a shock at first. Take care by the rocks as my daughter was swimming with her snorkel and grabbed a rock and ended up with 3 barbs in her thumb from a sea urchin.
There are a couple of nice restaurants with extensive menus and supermarkets just off the beach.
The area of Son Xoriguer - This hotel is in a quiet area, about a 20 minutes walk to the port of Cala'n Bosch where there are a large number of restaurants with a variety of food choices. There is a bit of a vibe going on here but no loud music or karaoke bars or anything of that nature. It is a very laid back area. There are also a few shops here too for souvenirs.
We took a walk to the lighthouse one day and had a drink at the bar. You can clearly see the Majorcan hills in the distance
We also took the local bus to Ciutadella. Can't remember the cost - maybe 3 Euros each way (took about 40 mins). We had a lovely day here. There was a market selling clothes, jewellery, bags etc and some lovely shops. We ate down by the port. Flies are a problem here but we chilled, ate, had drinks for a good few hours before getting the bus back again at about 9pm
Whilst on the subject of transport, I wished we had hired a car. Road users are very chilled and I would think it easy to drive around the island as there are some gorgeous places to visit. Maybe next time! There are also 2 and 3 seater pedalo bikes parked up at hotels. I think you can just use them at any point.
Anyway, a very long review but I think I covered most of what we experienced.
All-in-all, I would definitely recommend Grupotel Playa Club. They are mostly Germans holidaymakers here who seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Everyone was very respectful and polite. It is just a very laid back place.
I hope this review was helpful"
