Castles, canals and countryside
The Utrecht region is the Netherlands in easy-mode: compact, cultured and brilliantly connected, with the city of Utrecht at its heart and a patchwork of castles, forests, river landscapes and storybook towns around it. It’s a great pick if you want more than a one-city break, but don’t fancy spending half your holiday decoding train platforms.
Start with Utrecht city for canals, museums and café life, then widen the lens. Kasteel de Haar is the big fairytale moment, all turrets, gardens and grand interiors, while Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park brings woodland walks, cycling routes and fresh-air pauses. The Green Heart adds flatter, gentler scenery, with polders, rivers and historic villages giving you that classic Dutch countryside feel.
Food is wonderfully Dutch with a modern twist. Think pancakes, cheeses, bitterballen, fresh bread, Indonesian flavours, craft beer and canal-side dining. The joy here is the variety. You can do medieval towers one day, forest trails the next, then finish with a riverside dinner as the bikes glide by like tiny, determined swans.
