VENICE’S CULTURE-PACKED DISTRICT
Tempted by Venice but want to avoid the swarms of tourists flooding the streets and canals? Get a flavour of the ‘real Venice’ without the crowds of San Marco and for a fraction of the cost in Dorsoduro, one of Venice’s six sestieri (districts). This area offers a vibrant blend of art, culture, and serene canals, making it a must-visit area in this enchanting city. Located on the southern edge of Venice, Dorsoduro is known for its bohemian atmosphere, with narrow streets lined with artisan shops, cosy cafés, and historic buildings.
Drop your bags then head out to discover the Gallerie dell’Accademia, home to an impressive collection of Venetian art from the 14th to 18th centuries. Just a short walk away you’ll find the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, packed with modern art by the likes of Picasso, Pollock, and Dalí. For a taste of local life, head to Campo Santa Margherita, a lively square popular with students from the nearby Ca’ Foscari University. Here, you can enjoy a spritz at one of the outdoor cafés or browse the stalls at the market.
For lunch, try some of the vibey bacari that serve ciccheti, basically Italian tapas, but don’t use the T-word here! Then, find the iconic Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, which is a highlight in the area, with its stunning Baroque architecture and impressive views across the Grand Canal. Nearby, the Zattere promenade offers a peaceful spot for a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, with picturesque views of Giudecca Island.
End your day with a gondola ride through the quieter canals of Dorsoduro, or dine at one of the traditional trattorias and try Venetian cuisine in a charming, authentic setting. Dorsoduro’s mix of artistic treasures, lively squares, brilliant bacari, and tranquil corners make it a captivating and must-visit part of Venice – it’s begging to be explored, not ignored!
