"Travelled to Sol Katmandu, Magaluf with a Child
I travelled to Magaluf with my 9‑year‑old son. We’ve travelled extensively together since he was a baby — across Europe and beyond — from hostels and backpacking trips to 5‑star resorts. I knew Magaluf was a risk due to its reputation, but I chose this hotel because it looked great on paper and had good reviews. Unfortunately, while the hotel itself has many positives, the overall experience was severely affected by the behaviour of other guests.
The Good
Hotel & Rooms
* The hotel itself is modern, clean, and well maintained.
* Staff were lovely, friendly, and clearly doing their best in very difficult circumstances.
* Rooms were basic but clean. No drawers, but some shelving.
* Beds were very comfortable with clean bedding daily.
Food
* Excellent selection of fresh salads, pickles, cheeses, fruit, and local dishes.
* Lovely sangria and freshly made olive bread every day — we ate this daily.
* Breakfast was very good.
* Desserts were consistently lovely.
* If you’re looking for healthy, good‑quality food, there was plenty on offer.
Pools
* Pools were clean and well maintained.
* Lifeguards were present and tried hard to manage unruly children (though they were often ignored).
* From a facilities perspective, the pool area itself is good.
Location & Activities
* Beach is about 5 minutes away, though this particular beach has no sunbeds and did not feel family‑friendly when we visited (two men, clearly high, passed out on the beach at 10am fully clothed, wasn't ideal...)
* A **much nicer beach** is about 15 minutes away with better vibes, sunbeds, and beach service (approx. €22 per day including umbrella).
* **Western Water Park** was amazing — a highlight of the holiday.
* Taxi around €10.
* Entry approx. £80 for the two of us.
* Food expensive, but honestly the best chips we had all holiday!
The Bad (and Why It Matters for Parents)
**Guest Behaviour**
This is where the holiday completely fell apart.
* Constant drunken behaviour from certain groups of parents throughout the day.
* Children left unsupervised, all day and night (I put a lot of suncream on other kids and fed them daily, no sign of parents, some as young as 4/5 around the pool alone...screaming, shouting, and running through corridors at all hours.
* Noise in corridors included swearing, shouting, and drunken arguments, sometimes continuing until **4–5am.
* Water fights inside the hotel floors, up and down the stairs.
* Security had to be called several times — behaviour was completely unacceptable.
* The smell of weed around the pool area all day.
* Balcony was unusable due to constant cigarette smoke and noise — we never sat out there.
This wasn’t one bad group — it was continuous, with different groups throughout our stay.
Entertainment
* Sorry, but it was very poor.
* We watched one evening based on reviews claiming it was good — it wasn’t.
* We didn’t attend again.
Restaurant Atmosphere
* Extremely loud and stressful, again kids unsupervised running around everywhere. Adults smoking outside - by people sitting and eating and feeding babies?! Some lads kicking a football against the glass doors one night.
* Stampede at meal times for pizza and nuggets.
* We avoided these areas, but the overall noise levels made eating uncomfortable.
* We ended up eating out often just to escape the environment, despite the food being generally good.
Practical Issues
* No water machines on bedroom floors, only in both bars and the restaurant.
* To get water at night, you had to go down to the bar area — not something we felt comfortable doing due to the atmosphere.
Weather Impact
* We had two days of rain and cold, which meant being stuck inside the hotel — unfortunately alongside heavily intoxicated parents and frequent arguments.
* This made those days particularly uncomfortable as a parent.
Final Thoughts
This is a great hotel on paper:
* Good food
* Clean facilities
* Comfortable rooms
* Lovely, friendly staff
* Plenty for kids to do - great activities and well maintained
But it is completely undermined by a lack of control over guest behaviour.
I have never experienced anything like this, despite travelling widely with my child in all types of accommodation. The hotel urgently needs:
* Stricter rules
* Proper enforcement - security guards present and visible
* Limits on serving alcohol to already intoxicated guests
* More visible and empowered security presence
The noise was relentless — day and night — and by the end we were genuinely relieved to get home to peace and quiet. No way would this behaviour ever be tolerated in UK pubs, it shouldn't be tolerated abroad.
At one point, a mother kicked off at her young daughter in such an awful way, screaming and shouting in her face, the entire bar went quiet, it made another guest (adult, mother) cry and the whole family had to leave. It was terrible. Drunk and disorderly and just awful.
Who This Hotel *Is* and *Is Not* For
✅ Might suit:
* Adults or groups expecting a party atmosphere
* People unfazed by constant noise, swearing, shouting, drama, fights kicking off, unsupervised kids day and night
❌ Not suitable for:
* Families wanting rest
* Parents travelling alone with children
* Anyone expecting a relaxed or respectful, safe environment
It’s a real shame, because with better control, this could genuinely be a fantastic family‑friendly hotel.
We will not return based on the above."
