"The "Florida****" hotel of the "Universal" hotel chain combines the possibility of comfortable and peaceful rest thanks to the "18+" concept, walking distance to the entertainment and nightlife of the Magaluf resort town, and the enjoyment of panoramic views of the unusually picturesque "bounty" bay, with the prospect of taking magnificent photos and videos from the vacation. Although some nuances are still present.
Does the first phrase sound like an advertisement? No, that's how it is, at least in our view.
Now tell me more about everything.
The journey from Palma de Mallorca Airport to the "Florida" doors takes about an hour, if you don't stop at other hotels along the way. At the reception, you are greeted with a smile, very politely and friendly, but as for competence, it depends on who you get. We got what seems to be an intern who tried very hard, but couldn't explain anything properly. However, there are no complaints about the other reception staff. A technical specialist, who we needed about five times on the first day of our stay, they sent to our room within 5-10 minutes of receiving the request, and they answered all the questions we had in a sufficient amount.
The hotel building consists of 9 floors, but due to its unique architecture, from the city side it seems only three stories high, the other floors are as if hidden in a high cliff and cascade down from the sea side. In our opinion, not all rooms with a "sea view" are equally comfortable. Yes, in those rooms you have a stunning view from the balcony, but on the first and second floors, you will get a bonus of not very strong, but still noise from the pool and bar located on the ground floor. Some rooms in the "standard" category open onto the restaurant veranda, from which the endless clinking of spoons and forks is heard during breakfast and dinner. Therefore, I recommend asking for a room in the main building whose number ends with a digit from 12 to 18, there is even a semblance of a side view of the sea. There is also a small additional building, and we would not recommend staying there: firstly, you have to walk to the restaurant outside, and, say, in the rain, that is unpleasant, and secondly, even the rooms with a "sea view" look at the same restaurant terrace and sunbathing area.
As for the nuances that slightly marred our vacation, I will list them right away. First: the hotel does not hide that it is located on the top of a rather steep mountain, from which everyone who wants to go to the city will have to descend, and most importantly, after a walk, climb up about 500-600 meters at an angle of about 45 degrees. For people with disabilities, in poor physical shape, or just lazy, this may seem hellishly difficult at first. Then you get used to it a little, but you should still pay close attention to this factor when booking. Second: for those who do not have active international payment cards or do not want to use them when traveling abroad, this is definitely not for you. They require a card upon check-in as a "guarantee," as they explained to us. Otherwise, they just won't settle. In the future, for any calculations with the hotel (resort tax, deposit for drinks, etc.), they insist on a credit card, and only after a categorical refusal do they reluctantly accept cash, explaining it with the hotel's "cashless payment" concept. Like, we are freeing you from the need to carry cash with you. For some it is not a problem at all, but for some it is an inconvenience and stress. And finally, the third: the elevators in the hotel are problematic! In the morning and evening hours, their wait can be very long, especially since one of the two elevators does not stop at all floors. So the life hack is to stay best on the 5th or 7th floor, adjacent to the administrative, 6th.
Besides the mentioned points, which can be considered shortcomings if desired, the rest of the hotel description will be positive.
The standard number is quite large, clean, visually about 24 sq. m., with fairly new renovations. The setup is standard: a king-size bed, a table with a tea set (but no tea or sugar), a built-in small refrigerator, a wardrobe with what we consider a sufficient number of shelves and hangers, and a free safe (though we could only figure out how to operate it with the help of a technician; it turns out it can only be opened or closed within 5 seconds after entering the code, and then it locks again). It's a little inconvenient that there are two coffee table-like tables on both sides of the bed instead of nightstands, but it wasn't critical for us. 42-inch television (channels in Spanish, German, French, Italian, and English).
The balcony is small, equipped with a permanent clothes dryer, a plastic table, and two chairs. In strong wind or a storm at sea, a lot of trash blows onto the balcony. There is an ashtray: the silly, in our opinion, smoking bans on the balcony of this particular hotel, fortunately, did not affect it. Moreover, there is a high solid wall between the balconies, and the smoke does not drift onto other balconies at all.
The bathroom is standard: shower cabin, sink, toilet (in our room, for some reason, it was raised so high that my feet didn't reach the floor). There is no bidet. Four large bottles of shampoo-soap-conditioner for hair. The cleaning is very thorough, the room is perfectly clean after cleaning, they even swept everything out from under the bed. Towels are changed as soon as you drop them on the floor, bedding about once every three days. A small catch with the beach towels: they are only loaned for a week for a payment (not a deposit!) of 10 euros. At the same time, in any of the nearby shops, a beach towel can be bought for 4-5 euros.
We assess nutrition and its organization exclusively positively. The restaurant is impeccably clean. Part of the tables inside and almost all on the open terrace offer a breathtaking view of the sea, a small island, and city buildings that semi-circle the bay. No queues in the restaurant and no hustle and bustle inside, everything was quite orderly. It seems there is a dress code specified for the dinners, but some individuals were not shy about showing up even in swimming shorts.
Breakfasts are usually traditional, with lots of pastries, egg dishes, vegetables, pancakes, sausages, cheeses, and hot dogs. The taste of coffee from coffee machines was a little disappointing. At dinner, the assortment of dishes offered, even for Spain, where they usually serve well, is beyond praise. We won't list everything, but we can say that favorite dishes will appeal to both pizza and hamburger lovers, and proponents of healthy eating, as well as fans of more complex cuisine. Seafood (mussels, squid, and shrimp) was regularly available: in paella, in salads, and as part of other dishes. The waiters worked quickly, with a smile and a kind word. The prices for drinks at dinner are quite reasonable, beer is 3.40 - 4.80, water, soda, and juices from 3.00, there is a wide range of prices for wine, sangria, and cocktails. Payment for them by chip in the bracelet, if a deposit or a credit card was made.
There are coolers with hot or cold drinking water on every floor. It's really drinkable, even tasty.
The pool on the ground floor was small, but there was enough space for everyone, and there was no fuss around the sunbeds. A big plus is that the hotel guests during our stay did not have the habit of occupying sunbeds with towels all day. They sunbathed, swam – they left, and the sun loungers are free. There are several water massage units in the pool. The pool is not heated, but the sun shines on it all day, and by ten o'clock the water temperature is quite comfortable.
There is also a separate sunbathing area, away from the pool. Next to it is a cool "retro" style staircase leading down to a small stone beach, but I would be wary of swimming there, wild rocks and a rickety staircase to the water. However, the city beach is quite close (600–700 meters in a straight line), and it is fully equipped.
The main bar is next to the pool, also on the ground floor. There is also a very modest bar and a lobby area opposite the reception. On the 9th floor is the evening "Sky Bar"; we haven't been there in the evenings, but during the day it is pleasant to relax in the sun in the hanging chairs with a view of the entire panorama of the sea and the city. If it gets hot, there is an arch with a shower there to cool down a little.
The animation was limited to evening shows at the beach bar, and not even daily. About twenty people gathered for these shows, no more, which is not surprising: alas, the level of the artists was not high. However, it will do as an evening walk.
Public transport runs quite far from the hotel. Those who wish to visit the island's capital on their own will have to walk to the nearest stop of bus No. 104 (travel time to Palma is about 45 minutes). Landmark - Kathmandu Hotel and Amusement Park (by the way, I recommend it for those with children). Fare – 2-60 euros by card, if cash to the driver, then 4-50. A tourist double-decker bus circulates in Palma de Mallorca, the price for 24 hours is 27 euros.
Who first decided to visit Mallorca, don't be afraid to go there in October. The sea is warm, about 22–24 degrees, the weather is magnificent, it's not as hot anymore, but warm, up to 32 degrees during the day. During our stay there was one storm, with strong wind, but it started around midnight, and by lunchtime the bright sun was out and the clouds had dissipated.
A few words about something that has nothing to do with the hotel, but which I am forced to warn you about. Since the hotel only offers tours via card payment, we had to purchase the "Grand Tour of the Island" (essentially a sightseeing tour) from the street tour agency "Lemon Tours." Don't get in touch with them! They cut our tour in half without a clear explanation (allegedly due to safety concerns, we didn't go to the picturesque bay of Sa Colobra, although the weather was good and the sea was quite calm). In addition, the bus driver was clearly inexperienced, and he caused a small accident on a not difficult mountain road (not even a hairpin turn!), after which we were transported back on several different buses, and the belongings left in the first bus were never returned.
As a summary: will I return to this hotel and will I recommend it to my friends? Maybe I'll come back someday, "Florida" left a very pleasant impression on me. And even in case I will recommend him, but with mandatory consideration of his characteristics."
