"A Disappointing Experience That Falls Well Short of Five-Star Standards
As an experienced traveler who has stayed at numerous luxury hotels throughout Europe and beyond, I have come to appreciate the level of service, attention to detail, and overall quality that distinguishes a genuine five-star property. Unfortunately, our experience at the Tivoli in Amsterdam fell considerably short of those expectations.
We had been traveling throughout Europe and had already spent several days in Amsterdam, including two nights at the Waldorf Astoria, a property that genuinely exemplifies five-star hospitality. Regrettably, the contrast between the Waldorf Astoria and the Tivoli could not have been more pronounced.
Our disappointment began the moment we arrived. Upon entering the lobby, I immediately noticed an unpleasant odor resembling sewage mixed with a musty, damp, almost mold-like smell. The atmosphere was chaotic and disorganized, with no doorman available to assist us or provide direction. We were left to inquire about where and how to check in, hardly the welcome one would expect from a hotel advertising itself as a luxury five-star establishment.
When an associate finally motioned for us to approach the reception desk, he almost immediately informed us that he needed to leave for his lunch break and handed us over to another employee. There was no warm greeting, no welcome beverage, and certainly none of the personalized attention typically associated with a hotel of this advertised caliber.
The second associate appeared inexperienced and somewhat uncertain throughout the check-in process. He confirmed that our reservation included a balcony room but informed us that the room was not yet ready. He took our telephone number and assured us that we would receive a call or text message once it became available.
We decided to visit a nearby café while waiting. After approximately an hour and a half without receiving any communication, we returned to the hotel to inquire about the status of our room. To our surprise, the room was ready, yet no one had bothered to contact us as promised. It was another disappointing example of the lack of attentiveness and follow-through we experienced throughout our stay.
Unfortunately, the condition of the room was even more concerning.
Upon entering, we were immediately confronted with a strong, unusual chemical-like odor, somewhat reminiscent of pesticides or an industrial cleaning product. The smell was both unpleasant and concerning. In addition, the carpeting was visibly stained and dirty, and paint was peeling from the ceiling. These are conditions I would not expect from a reputable three-star hotel, much less a property promoting itself as five-star luxury.
After developing a significant headache while in the room, I went downstairs to speak with the manager on duty. To his credit, he was willing to discuss my concerns and assured me that the hotel did not use harsh cleaning chemicals or pesticides. I invited him to accompany me upstairs to experience the odor firsthand.
After inspecting the room, he acknowledged that there was indeed an unusual smell. During our conversation, he also explained that the hotel occasionally experiences unpleasant odors in the lobby originating from the nearby canal, apparently entering through drains or floor drainage systems.
While this explanation may account for the sewage-like smell in the lobby, the odor in our guest room was distinctly different and much more chemical in nature. The manager indicated that he would consult with housekeeping and its management to determine whether anything had been sprayed or applied in the room. Unfortunately, we never received a clear explanation of what was causing the odor.
Our final disappointment came with room service. We ordered dinner, only to experience an extraordinary delay of approximately two hours beyond the expected delivery time, which the hotel subsequently acknowledged. We never received a satisfactory explanation for the delay. Once again, the service was completely inconsistent with what one should reasonably expect from a luxury hotel.
Having stayed at both the Conrad in London and the Waldorf Astoria in Amsterdam during this same European trip, we had recent, firsthand examples of what true five-star hospitality looks and feels like. Both properties delivered the professionalism, refinement, cleanliness, and attention to detail that justify their luxury positioning.
The Tivoli, unfortunately, delivered none of those qualities consistently.
My husband and I both agreed that, based on our experience, this property was operating at a level much closer to a three-star hotel than the five-star establishment it claims to be.
What made the experience particularly disappointing was that this was our final night in Europe, and we had hoped to conclude an otherwise wonderful trip with a comfortable, memorable stay.
Instead, we were left with unpleasant odors, questionable room conditions, disorganized service, unfulfilled promises, and an exceptionally poor room-service experience.
I recognize that even the finest hotels can occasionally experience operational challenges. What separates genuine luxury hospitality from the rest, however, is the ability to anticipate guests’ needs, maintain impeccable standards, and resolve problems promptly and professionally.
Based on our experience, the Tivoli has considerable room for improvement before it can reasonably deliver the five-star experience it advertises.
Overall, an extremely disappointing stay and certainly not a property I would recommend to travelers seeking a true five-star hotel experience."
