Golden Port Salou & Spa Hotel

"Feedback on our stay at this hotel. The one thing that can be noted is the cleanliness of the rooms and common areas. The proximity to Rethymno is easy to access by bus (€2.20). The beach is right at the hotel (bring beach shoes); the big negative point is the catering, it was, I won't say catastrophic but it's not far off (apart from the Italian restaurant where the service and the meal were satisfactory, but for the rest we had the impression of being in a cafeteria). I have a hard time hearing the reviews noting that the quality was there. Either we are at the end of the season and the staff is worn out, or there really is a quality problem. Overcooked products, especially at the grill, tasteless, low-end products. This is not our first stay during this period and the service has never been this low."

"Beautiful hotel complex with some clear weaknesses. Basically, it is a nice hotel that makes a really good impression at first glance. The complex is well-maintained, the rooms are generously designed, and the direct location on the beach is ideal. Unfortunately, the hotel could not meet our initial expectations during the stay. The food was particularly disappointing. The selection is available, but the quality leaves something to be desired. Frequently, the dishes were only lukewarm or even cold. For a five-star hotel, that is not acceptable from our point of view. The staff is mostly trying hard, but they often seem stressed, especially in the restaurant. During meals, we sometimes had the feeling of being in the way rather than being welcome. We would like to highlight the employees at the beach bar as well as the cleaning staff positively. The employees at the beach bar were always friendly and attentive. The cleaning staff also does really good work. Our room was cleaned reliably and thoroughly. That explicitly deserves recognition. Another point of criticism is the enormous lack of soundproofing in the rooms. You can hear almost every door and every step in the hallway, which significantly limits relaxation at times. Unfortunately, all three of us also had to struggle with stomach problems during our stay. We cannot judge whether these were related to the food. However, the way the situation was handled was disappointing for us. We would have at least wished for some support or accommodation from the reception. Even the offer to have food brought to our room would have been a nice gesture. Instead, we had to take care of it ourselves. Conclusion: The location and the well-maintained grounds are definitely plus points. Individual employees also do excellent work. Unfortunately, this is offset by clear weaknesses in the quality of the food, the noise levels, and guest services. Especially for a hotel of this category, we expect more attention, service, and hospitality. It is a shame, because with a few improvements, the hotel could live up to its five-star claim much better. We struggled with gastrointestinal issues until the last day of our departure. We were there for 9 nights."
