São João
This popular festival takes place on the night of the 23rd and the 24th of June each year. More than 200,000 people gather to watch the incredible firework display over the Douro River. The event sees lots of time-honoured traditions re-enacted, including the launch of hot air balloons…and locals rubbing leeks over each other’s faces! The party ends on Foz beach as the sun comes up.
