Enchanting Atlas Mountain retreat

Fancy rubbing shoulders with Sir Richard Branson? No promises, of course – but this Atlas Mountains retreat is firmly on his list of favourites. A quick glance at the awards cabinet – three MICHELIN Keys and a spot on the Condé Nast Traveller Gold List 2025 – tells you everything you need to know.

The setting sells itself – high in the mountains, quietly spectacular – but it’s the details that linger. Berber design touches strike just the right balance, while the kitchen turns out plates shaped by ingredients picked straight from the hotel’s own gardens. Then there’s the people – the true heart of this place. 100% Moroccan, many from nearby Berber villages, with a warmth and authenticity you can’t manufacture.

Our advice? Stay as long as possible, soak up as much as you can, and make peace with the fact that most other getaways will feel a touch underwhelming afterwards.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

Hotel highlights

Getting to Kasbah Tamadot feels a little like making a pilgrimage, albeit one with a swankier than usual payoff. The road winds through the red-earth foothills of the Atlas until the fortress-like silhouette reveals itself among the brush, looking less built than discovered. Surrounded by gardens that seem designed for aimless wandering, this is the sort of place that makes 'getting away from it all' a reality – not just something you dream about in a meeting that could’ve been an email.

And with such a setting comes an enviable opportunity to explore. Scenic bike rides along winding trails and guided treks along rugged mountain paths promise views that demand to be given the props they deserve. Stop, take it all in, commit it to your camera roll, and then take it in some more.

Experiences here come with a little injection of Moroccan magic. Whether you’re watching Sam play it again on the hotel’s big screen under the stars or mastering age-old Moroccan cooking techniques – and feasting on the spoils – the team here know a thing or two about making memories.

As for the can’t-sit-still crowd – not us, who you’ll find camped out on a poolside lounger – there are floodlit tennis courts and a well decked-out gym. Or, if you’re itching to get out on the fairways, you’ll find a handful of world-class golf courses in the surrounds. Don’t worry about clubs, carts, or caddies, either – that’s just the start of what the team here can organise for you. Also on the list? Trips to nearby villages where you can learn about the work that the Eve Branson Foundation is doing in local communities.

Just like its mountainous setting, the cuisine here will leave your head in the clouds. Take your pick from two spectacular restaurants – Asayss and Kanoun – both of which specialise in fine Moroccan dishes entwined with familiar international flavours.

Adjacent to the hotel’s picturesque gardens, Asayss is the more laid-back of the two. Think cosy sofas, a private terrace, and a crackling fireplace that’ll call to you when evening sets in. Kanoun, meanwhile, offers an intimate dining experience with sophisticated dishes complemented by a glass of the grape from the carefully curated wine menu. This is the art of living, Moroccan style.

Named after the Berber word for relaxation, Asounfou Spa is your own private hideaway from the outside world. Treat yourself to a traditional Moroccan hammam, where your skin will be cleansed using ancient techniques that span back over 2000 years.

Treatments, meanwhile, are carried out in traditionally designed rooms that’ll make you feel like Moroccan royalty. But for an extra special treat, why not book an invigorating massage or therapy in the privacy of your own riad, tent or room? Trust us, it’ll be worth it.

...Kasbah Tamadot. Of just about every accolade going. 2025 was about as close to a clean sweep as you'll get – three MICHELIN Keys, Condé Nast Traveller Gold List, TIME's list of the World's Greatest Places... their awards cabinet is the stuff of luxury hotel dreams.

But don't just take the critics' words for it. Kasbah Tamadot also placed in the top five hotels in Africa in the Condé Nast Traveller 2025 Readers' Choice Awards. Truly a stay worth writing home – or voting in the world's most coveted travel awards – about.

The view from the infinity pool. It’s one you’ll be waxing lyrical about long after you’ve returned home.

The community spirit. As well as a staff that’s 100% Moroccan, the Eve Branson Foundation empowers locals in nearby villages with projects that preserve heritage while teaching valuable skills such as woodwork and weaving.

The ultra-luxurious Riads. Tucked away in the gardens with their very own private infinity pools, and a rooftop hot tub, they’re perfect for families, groups, or anyone who's just feeling extra indulgent.
