A pocket of lesser-explored beauty
In the south of Italy, the Cilento region may not be as well-known as some of its more famous neighbours (we’re looking at you, Amalfi Coast), but it brings its own version of scenic beauty, fabulous beaches, picturesque Italian villages, and delicious cuisine to the party.
Cilento is in the Campania region, south of the Amalfi Coast, and is considered to be one of the most beautiful (yet blissfully lesser explored) areas of Italy. The Cilento Coast runs from Salerno to Sapri, and from some locations, you can see the Amalfi Coast and Capri across the Tyrrhenian Sea. Beach towns like Agropoli and Acciaroli are quiet and sandy, many with Blue Flag status, and the restaurants serve freshly prepared Mediterranean dishes that champion the tasty local produce.
Aside from its lovely landscapes, calm beaches, and delicious menus, Cilento has a rich history. You can explore ancient ruins like the 3000-year-old Paestum and venture into national parks, including the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, a mountainous region sliced by river valleys that slope down to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
