    There’s a steep climb down a long staircase, but the small, secluded Castiglione beach is one of the waterfronts accessible from the hills of Ravello.
    Apart from its Unesco-listed architecture, Ravello is known as the holiday destination of many famous writers and artists, whose creativity still influences the town today.
    The hottest months in Ravello are July and August, when average temperatures climb to around 30°C. These are also the busiest months when holidaymakers from Italy and abroad flock to the Amalfi coast. There’s a lively social scene with plenty of events for you to enjoy. You’ll find lots of glamorous yachts moored along the seafront. If you’d like to take your Ravello holiday at a slower pace, April and May bring lovely spring weather. September’s a good choice, too, pleasantly warm and without the summer crowds.
    Ravello is about a 45-minute drive from the famous archaeological park at Pompeii, where you can see the remains of an ancient city preserved by volcanic ash. You can go to Pompeii from Ravello by public transport, but this means making several connections. However, you can hire a car or cab. The ruins of Herculaneum, another Roman town frozen in time ash, are about an hour’s drive away.
    Much of Ravello’s cuisine is based on freshly grown local ingredients, so count on delicious tomato and aubergine dishes, alongside the region’s signature lemon desserts and, naturally, limoncello liqueur.
    Italy is generally family-friendly, and travellers with children will find themselves welcomed just as warmly in Ravello as in any Italian town. But the major appeal of a Ravello holiday is the steep, spectacular landscape and the rocky coast, which may be tiring for little legs. You can take the family hiking the paths around Ravello. Should you want a more low-key holiday, you'll enjoy adopting the local lifestyle, people-watching in the squares and fabulous food and drink. And it’s good for couples, with the beauty of the Amalfi coastline adding an extra note of romance.
    The pace of life in Ravello is relaxed and tranquil. This town is made for la dolce vita, sipping a drink in the warm evening while looking out over the sea. With a vibrant cultural scene and several major concert halls, Ravello is also known as The City of Music. However, if you want to sample the glamorous social life of the Amalfi coast, the beautiful town of Praiano is just a twenty-minute drive away. Here you’ll find bars and the legendary Africana nightclub.
    Ravello dates back to the ninth century when it became part of the Amalfi Republic. It may have been founded as early as the fifth century. More recently, Ravello became world-famous as the favourite destination of artists, writers and socialites, from Giovanni Boccaccio to Virginia Woolf to Jackie Kennedy. Today, there is a wealth of history and culture to explore on your Ravello holiday. The medieval cathedral, the Villa Rufolo and the Villa Cimbrone – described by the writer Gore Vidal as having “the most beautiful view in the world” – are among its greatest attractions.
    It’ll take you about 13 minutes to drive from Ravello to the historic town of Amalfi. Regular buses run between the two, which take around half an hour. Whether you want to explore the beauty of the old town, soak up the atmosphere of old-school glamour or spend some time at the beach, it’s easy to make a day trip to Amalfi part of your Ravello holiday. If you’re feeling energetic and can face the rugged landscape, you can also hike there in under an hour. From Amalfi, you can also take a boat trip to Capri, Sorrento or Positano.
