"We have visited Kos many times, we love the island. We booked Atki beach club a year in advance. The purpose of our trip was to enjoy the half term holidays together, and as it's a special birthday in the next few weeks following our visit, it would be the perfect time to go.
We booked with Jet2 holidays, it wasn't cheap but the reviews were good. Jet2 rated this hotel 4*.
On arrival we had to pay hotel room tax, that's not an issue and we've paid room tax before. We were expecting to pay it, it didn't come as a surprise. But we paid this based on the hotel being 5*, that isn't what we booked. We booked 4*.
On getting the keys to the room, a kind young man assisted us with our bags, the room door was open on arrival. And it transpired that the lock was broken and the key card didn't work. The door frame was broken and it appeared the door had been kicked in. The young man said he would report to reception. I mean we are on holiday with our young son, the door needs to be locked.
Time passed by and no maintenance attended the room. I had to go to reception, the staff directed me to a lady who was 'guest relations' she did come to see the lock and the door as she didn't believe me. Then she organised a maintenance man to come and fix it. I asked how long this was going to take and she said 'soon'. It turned out the door lock just needed new batteries.
However, I've just paid tax for a room claiming to be 5*, this isn't 5*, the room would have been vacated and cleaned that morning. So why was it allowed to be allocated without the door lock working. It isn't 5*.
Later that evening, my husband had a shower, the whole bathroom flooded. Water was coming up from a drain in the bathroom. It stunk. Water flooded the bathroom when the shower or taps are in use. This meant on the first evening of our holiday - we couldn't actually wash. Or if we did we stood in a puddle of dirty smelly water.
I reported this the following morning to reception. The receptionists are quite dismissive and rude. Again I was directed to the hotel's guest relations person. Who hadn't arrived at that time.
I attempted to discuss the issue with the Jet2 rep, who had arrived that morning for a welcome meeting. She was very rude and dismissive. She didn't give me chance to explain our issues with the room. She didn't listen to any of my concerns, she just walked away. I was so shocked at how a travel company can claim this hotel is 4* yet we have a bathroom that we cannot use. It is totally unacceptable and unsanitary. We had paid thousands of pounds for this holiday and were traveling with our 6 year old son. Jet2 should be ashamed. I was disgusted. At that point, I wanted to go home.
After waiting all morning, we wasted the first morning of our holiday... The maintenance man did attend the room and he unblocked the dirty smelly drain. I was told the room had been used all summer and no one else had reported this problem.
We never had hot water for the whole week of our stay. Yes we had cold showers for a week!
Every time the shower was run or the sink taps the bathroom started to smell. The bathroom would also get little fly's in it.
The room finish was poor, holes in walls, poor paint work. The bathroom was tiny, couldn't open the door fully because of the toilet. The tiles where cracked and the silicone sealing in the shower had mold. The shower head wouldn't stay attached to the holder. The room was just tatty. The standard and finish is poor.
One morning we discovered ants had literally eaten, my son's football top and tracksuit. Like really. Brand new football top and Adidas tracksuit. In a hotel room.
You do get better in a 2* hotel. Fact.
The food was okay, it was repetitive and cold.
Drinks are served in paper cups in the day, this is for safety reasons and it's understandable. However at night, drinks were being served in hot glasses or paper cups. It's like it's too much trouble to collect glasses and wash them. We didn't find the bar staff particularly friendly. Just lazy. I had to ask for my drinks in an evening to be served in a glass. Why?
During our stay many holiday makers came down with a sickness bug. This included my husband. We weren't surprised as the hotel isn't clean. Kids running around unaccompanied in the canteen.
Only one toilet area near the restaurant/reception/lobby area. No hand drying facilities for the ladies. I never saw the floors being mopped. Or sun loungers being cleaned. I never really saw much general cleaning around the hotel. The hotel didn't really encourage hand washing. Alcohol gel is available in the entrance to the canteen, but guests don't tend to use it.
Despite all the issues, we didn't let them spoil our quality time on this beautiful island. We did hire a car and we went out exploring the island for a few days. We did also use the hotels free bus service into Kardamina, we didn't experience any problems with this. We used the table tennis, tennis court and football pitch. The beach area was nice, it is rocky but it was fine. We walked along the beach one day into Kardamina, this took about 45 mins. We stopped half way for a drink at the Atlantis little beach bar. This was a cute little beach bar.
The room had a shared pool and this was a nice area. The room had 3 beds, but only 2 chairs on the balcony/terrace area. Surely the chairs available should match the number of beds and guests the room accommodates.
We will definitely visit Kos again, will we visit Atki beach? - absolutely not.
I've seen the reviews of 'a holiday is what you make it' and 'dont go looking for problems'. However a basic standard is expected, especially if you've paid for a 4* hotel and paid 5* tax. We have stopped in better, cleaner, more hospitable accommodation and paid a lot less for it.
The higher the star rating the higher the expectations. I would give this hotel 2* and that's generous. We generally don't moan or complain, it's not what we go on holiday to do.
Would I advise anyone to stop here. No I wouldn't based on my experience. If you insist on booking I would avoid booking this hotel with Jet2. This is down to the lack of support when needed."
