"Disappointing Experience with Room, Service, and Noise – Needs Improvement
No doubt that Steigenberger Alcarcar is a very nice hotel. But.....
We recently stayed at this resort and unfortunately had a mixed experience. While some staff members were friendly and service-minded, several issues significantly impacted our stay. Our Egypt experience comes from various stay both in Sharm and in Hurghada.
Dining and Service
• Drink orders at dinner were frequently incorrect – about 60% of the time. Waiters didn’t write anything down, even when we ordered just four drinks between two peo-ple. This led to many confusions and delays, especially during busy hours.
• The snack bar food was underwhelming. A “chicken sandwich” consisted of four small chicken pieces on sticks and a pita bread, with minimal garnish. In general the food was at a low standard
• Many chairs at the snack bars had bird droppings on them. Birds were also seen flying off with entire sausages from the breakfast buffet – not a pleasant sight while eating.
• At the bread station, there was only one knife, often causing a queue. No hand sanitizers at all in all the restaurants
Noise and Lawn Maintenance
• One of the most disruptive aspects was the daily lawn mowing – right next to guests re-laxing by the pool. The noise was so intrusive that guests actually applauded when the gardener finally stopped. Even more puzzling, the same patch of grass was mowed every other day, despite minimal growth. A simple solution: invest in electric lawnmowers or robotic mowers to reduce noise and improve guest comfort.
Room and Facilities
• Our bed linen was broken and not changed on a daily basis.
• The minibar was not as described. We were told it included chocolate, nuts, and Red Bull, but ours only had four cans of soda and one beer.
• The gym lacked drinking water, and some of the sweat towels smelled unpleasant.
Information and Communication
• No clear instructions were provided about the electric shuttle service – we didn’t know if it existed or how to use it.
• Confusion around pool/beach towels: some pools allowed exchanges, others didn’t. No guidance was given at check-in.
• Toilets were hard to find and insufficient in number, especially around pool number two and the beach.
Bathroom Safety and Poor Reception Service
Another serious issue we encountered was with our shower cabin. Water leaked out onto the bathroom floor, which is made of stone tiles and became dangerously slip-pery. Despite contacting the reception four times, no action was taken. It wasn’t until the fifth time—when I became visibly upset and angry—that the issue was finally ad-dressed and the shower was repaired.
This experience highlighted a lack of capability at the reception desk. The staff seemed unable to resolve even basic maintenance problems, and their level of English was not sufficient to handle guest concerns effectively. This added unnecessary frustration to our stay and is something the resort should urgently improve. The staff wanted to help for sure but didn’t know how to approach the issues in the correct and professional way.
Entertainment and Atmosphere
• The entertainment at the beach was extremely loud and heavily affected our room (3211). It would be better to tailor events to the actual guest demographics. For example, the fire show seemed misaligned with the audience – who was it really for? A few days later the fire show was repeated...! Come on now...
• A suggestion: create a relaxed beach bar with cold drinks and lounge music in the late afternoon. This would offer a more enjoyable atmosphere than the current loud entertainment. See for example Rixos for adult only to experience their solution.
Smoking Policy
• We strongly recommend implementing a no-smoking policy at pools and restaurants, with designated smoking areas instead. People generally smoked at all the restaurants and that is not a nice experience. Seems like Egypt is some years behind the non smoking trends in Europe.
Positive Highlights
• Staff at the pools were generally kind and attentive.
• The ice cream vendor was a lovely touch.
• Mint-scented handkerchiefs and glasses cleaning service at the adult pool were appreciated.
• Room cleaning was satisfactory, and overall resort cleanliness was acceptable."
