Macdonald Holyrood Hotel

"This place did not keep up with Marriott standards. We are Marriott members and were appalled with the housekeeping. The sheet did not fit the bed. After a long travel day we just wanted a shower only to find the soap dispenser empty so we had to use hand soap. We asked reception to replenish and the next day came back. They had done our room but still no soap! I tracked down housekeeping and the lady was extremely rude! Next day we didn’t have our room serviced but we needed toilet paper. I went to hall and asked the lady and she said I could only have one. I pointed out we had zero and if they had serviced our room they would have had to leave two anyway. Again she said, no you can only have one. When I disagreed because were were there for a few days, she reluctantly gave me one. She was SO rude!! They need quality control protocols set up. Really disappointed"

"Surprised this isn't rated higher. Wonderful Marriott. Room was huge ( we were upgraded) , location is perfect ( near end of the Royal Mile about 1 1/2 blocks off of). and staff is fantastic. If we had an issue is that we are Bonvoy members and Marriott gives us the Concierges treatment so we get breakfast and drinks and appetizes starting at 5:30. We don't really feel like dinner afterwards so we just go out for ice cream. Missed a lot of great restaurants in Edinburgh. We had a wonderful stay and even if it was just for a room I would always recommend a Marriott. I said the staff was great and they were wonderful. I found it interesting that most were not Scottish but everyone of them did everything they could to make our stay special. I have had that kind of service at every Marriott ( and their other brands) that I have ever stayed at. Marriott does a GREAT job! Walked to Holyrood Castle and Parliament and taxi'ed up to Castle and walked home ( downhill all the way)! Loved the location."

"This hotel is in a pretty good location if you like to walk. The atmosphere is less than a typical Marriott. We chose this hotel because we wanted to splurge a little on comfort but were sadly dismayed with our experience. Two reception staff were welcoming and enthusiastic while the other two were dismissive and rude. So unlike a Marriott. The sheets and pillow case were stained. The bed wasn’t made properly ( sheets would come off revealing the mattress) so we had to make the bed ourselves. No soap or conditioner in the shower. We asked for help with this and got an aggressive response. We had to ask the same staff member the following day for more toilet paper. That didn’t go well either. The room itself was very well used and in need of a clean, ie; removing the gum stuck in the carpet, and stains from ??? and all the layered dust. On a happier note - the breakfast was tremendous and covered all bases. The bed itself was very comfortable. This hotel wasn’t good value for money in the Marriott world. Hopefully management will get on top of the cleaning end of their business and provide some form of moral boost for their reception staff. The team here isn’t working as a team."
