Best Western Edinburgh South Braid Hills Hotel

"Lovely friendly welcome from receptionist. Initially we were happy with room which was spacious & warm with lovely view, with fridge and safe. However, very disturbed sleep during to loud road noise. (room 318). Double glazing ineffective. Also noticed few areas of room that required upgrade / repair. Headboard damaged, stains on wall and only one wardrobe door. Good location & parking. Walked to Morningside in around 15 mins which had plenty of shops, bars, eateries. Walked into Edinburgh centre in total around 50 mins. Bus back which stopped right outside hotel. Breakfast was okay, but area lacked atmosphere , was a bit run down in places and staff did not show to table or offer information about buffet. Just left to get on with it. Bar prices were extortionate! £16.70 for a bottle of cider & zero alcohol G&T. Explains why bar was empty."

"Definitely a ‘faded glory’ Victorian hotel. Our room looked clean, although there was not a lot of storage for a couple staying 4 nights. The bathroom radiator didn’t work and the flooring was lifting, due to water from the shower going under the glass screen as it didn’t have a rubber strip at the bottom. None of this was resolved whilst we were there, despite reporting the problems. We ate in the restaurant on our first night - the menu wasn’t very long but was adequate for what we wanted, although the restaurant itself was quite chilly. The drinks in the hotel bar were the most expensive of our whole holiday - we ordered the same at each hotel we stayed in. On the 3rd night we were awoken by the sound of dripping water - it was coming though the corner of the bay window roof. The staff moved us to a ‘delux’ room. Certainly larger, but the paper was peeling from the ceiling from previous leaks in the room/area above - so not delux!. Breakfast was served in a room that was clearly used as a function room. The food was plentiful, although there were no warm plates for the cooked breakfast. The beds in both the rooms were stayed were in also need new mattresses. This hotel definitely needs a revamp. We moved to Northumbria from this hotel, which had the same star rating but was the polar opposite. Braids Hill is not a hotel we would recommend."

"Having stayed at this hotel several times over the years we returned for a short break having not been for a couple of years. We knew about there being no lift etc so the fact that we were up on a high floor was fine although no help was offered with bags. I also agree with previous comments re poor water pressure and central heating not working although we had an electric heater in our room. Without going into specifics this poor hotel needs a big helping of TLC to bring it up to scratch both in terms of decor and service provision and I am sad to say that until this happens we will probably be staying somewhere else in Edinburgh."
