Hidden gem on the Mediterranean
Holidays to Mahdia tick all the right boxes. White sandy beaches, authentic souks, and Tunisian charm around every corner. The beach here might just be one of the country’s best – and at 10km there’s plenty of it for you to make use of. If scuba diving is top of your list, you’re in luck. Mahdia is one of Tunisia’s top spots for a dive, and you’ll find plenty of scuba schools dotted along the coastline.
A trip here is best spent in the slow lane – the town is still a sleepy fishing village at heart. Ramble through the narrow laneways of the medina to Cairo Square, where you can grab a coffee and watch the world go by. The Black Gate is all that remains of the original walls of the old town and is well worth a visit for the view from the top of the gatehouse. Wander just a bit further for an authentic souk, teeming with locals selling silks, which the town is famed for.
Away from the whitewashed buildings of the old town, you’ll find the tourist area with its many bars, restaurants, and cafés. You’ll be spoiled for choice down at the beachfront promenade – it’s lined with spots serving up all manner of cuisines. Fish is the speciality here so make sure to stop by a seafood café.
