Malmo cityscape

From sandy shores to storybook towns

The wider Malmo region is where city energy gives way to the full Skåne spread: long beaches, little fishing villages, rolling farmland, old castles and roads that seem designed for slow drives and spontaneous bakery stops. Stay around Malmo and you can easily branch out to Lund’s cathedral-and-cobbles charm, the wide-open sands of Skanor-Falsterbo, and countryside dotted with manors, gardens and half-timbered villages. Skane’s mix is the real hook here. One minute you’re by the sea, the next you’re pedalling past rapeseed fields or plotting a detour to a medieval landmark.

What makes the region different from Malmö city itself is the sense of space. This is southern Sweden in widescreen: more than 400km of coastline, cold-bath culture, hiking and biking routes, sandy beaches, lakes, forests and a deep streak of Danish and Viking history running through the towns and villages. It’s also brilliantly easy to explore, with Malmo as a handy hub and Denmark just over the bridge for extra bragging rights. Malmo’s a great shout if you want a break with variety baked in. Go for the city, stay for the coast, and leave with a camera roll full of beaches, bridges and unexpectedly good cinnamon buns.

Your Malmo questions, answered

Yes, especially if Malmo is your base. The city’s well connected by train, bus and bridge links, so you can reach several regional highlights without driving, though a car does make coast-and-countryside wandering even easier.

Think beaches, farmland, forests, lakes and open countryside rather than dramatic mountains. Skane is known for its patchwork scenery, with sandy shores in some areas and steeper coastal stretches in others, all wrapped in a gentler southern Swedish climate.
Handily, both. You’ve got castles, medieval churches, Danish and Viking influences, plus hiking, biking, paddling and coastal bathing. It’s one of those places where you can do a castle in the morning and a beach walk later on.
Skane works well year-round. It has a mild climate, early springs and long summers for outdoor exploring. Warmer months are best for beaches and cycling, while cooler seasons suit city breaks, saunas and scenic drives.
