A true Majorcan retreat

You’ll find La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel Mallorca hidden – albeit not very well – among the rolling hills about Deià. It rises from the greenery, but it’s far from imposing. You’d be forgiven for thinking it grew there, much like the olive trees that surround it. This corner of Majorca is raw, rugged, and oh-so-rewarding: winding mountain roads, olive groves stretching into the distance, air scented by citrus and sea – and you, surrendering to the rare pleasure of unstructured days.

At the heart of the estate, two historic manor houses spill onto sun-warmed terraces where time takes on a new, slower pace. You might come with intentions – tennis after breakfast, a hike into the Tramuntana, an afternoon art class – but don’t be surprised if the plan dissolves somewhere between the pool and that second coffee.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

Hotel highlights

The approach to the estate sets the tone: the country roads, the forested hillside, the honeyed rooftops of Deià. It’s perched overlooking the village, woven into the foothills like it’s always belonged there. The grounds are vast but never lean excessive. It’s an estate built for rambling: gardens, terraces, and paths hide sculptures, poets’ plinths, and even a resident donkey or two.

Stray beyond the boundary and you’re on mountain trails once walked by writers and artists. Cala Deià is close enough for a swim, Palma close enough for curiosity – but neither feels urgent. This is a setting that invites exploration, then gently suggests a nap. Many guests plan excursions. Fewer actually leave. No one regrets it.

Eating here is a pleasure, not a production. El Olivo, set within a former olive press, is a treat for the senses – candlelit, intimate, and deeply rooted in Majorcan tradition. The tasting menu is equal parts joy and soul: salt-baked prawns, slow-cooked meats, citrus desserts that taste like sunshine. Dress up, linger, and enjoy the wine list.

Restaurante Miró pairs Mediterranean plates with mountain views and original artwork – ideal for lunches that accidentally stretch into sunset. Tramuntana Grill carries you from afternoon into evening, with fire-kissed local produce and the hotel’s own olive oil taking centre stage. By the pool, it’s smoothies, green juices, and cocktails that would cancel your plans – if you had any.

The spa doesn’t shout for attention – it waits patiently for you to wander in. It’s all cool stone, soft light, and an offering that doesn’t need to chase trends. Treatments lean local and languorous. The Citrus Siesta is our quiet favourite, beginning with olive-oil exfoliation and ending in a massage so calming it borders on hypnotic.

There’s a heated indoor pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi for drifting between, plus yoga and meditation in the gardens when the mood strikes. Early risers should try a guided dawn walk – binoculars provided – when the mountains feel entirely your own. This is the art of the retreat, perfected.

And plenty of scope to blow off steam. The offering for kids here is almost exactly like the offering for adults – just in miniature. Think pottery with the resident sculptor, cooking with the chef, and tennis coaching over on the courts. All thoughtfully supervised courtesy of the Smile Club.

That means more opportunities to steal away to the spa, linger over a cappuccino, or genuinely get lost in a book without curious minds interrupting with burning questions. Regroup for laid-back lunches, friendly (or maybe not) tennis matches, or a game of pétanque on the lawn. Nothing forced, no concrete plans, just the same slow rhythm that’s in everything this place does.

The backdrop. All verdant greenery, rugged stone, and honey-hued buildings stepped into the hillside. And just imagine it at golden hour.

First light walks, for a sunrise you'll be thinking about long after the stars roll in. Choose from a private tour with an expert guide, or forge your own path at dawn with a map and a pair of binoculars.

The slow-lane style activities. Art classes, cocktail workshops, yoga in the gardens... take a breath and let the calm come to you. Or don't – if you can't bear to sit still hit the tennis courts or the mountain trails, this is your Majorcan retreat, your way.
