"Great Overall Stay at Sol de Alcudia – With a Few Areas for Improvement
Having previously stayed at the Sol de Alcudia Apartments back in 2009, I already knew the location was spot-on for our needs.
Upon arrival, the front of the hotel looked wonderful—the old lawn has been beautifully landscaped and well-maintained. The reception area is also a huge improvement: big, bright, and modern. Although our room wasn't ready when we arrived (a first for us abroad), the friendly receptionist called us just an hour later to let us know it was good to go after we placed our bags in luggage storage.
Accessibility & Amenities
The hotel was accommodating regarding my wife's disability. They had zero issues with her mobility scooter and allowed us to charge it in reception every night. I had requested a pool view and a walk-in shower, and thankfully, we received both.
The Room & Kitchenette
Located on Floor 1, our room was modern, bright, and overlooked the pool with great views and zero noise after 11 pm. The air conditioning worked perfectly—just make sure the door is shut completely so the magnet sensor connects, or it won't kick in. The balcony was a bit small with only three chairs, though it was too hot for us to sit out anyway. A real suntrap.
However, the room layout has a few drawbacks:
Bedding: The lounge sofa bed has a pull-out mattress literally an inch off the floor. It wasn't clear when booking and is definitely not ideal for older kids or teenagers (my 15-year-old is over 6ft). The main bedroom singles were comfortable, but my mattress kept sliding off.
Storage & Furniture: The bedroom desperately needs a dressing table, a mirror, and drawers—there is plenty of space for them, but not a single drawer in the room.
Kitchenette: Fine if you only use the fridge, but inadequate for full self-catering. It lacks an oven (only a microwave and two electric hobs), needs larger drinking glasses, and features a coffee maker instead of a kettle.
Minor Details: Front doors self-close extremely loudly, leading to constant slamming from neighbours. The toilets are also set quite low.
Housekeeping & Cleanliness
Housekeeping was our main disappointment. Upon arrival, there were long black hairs over the bathroom floor. Over our fortnight stay, maids only made the beds and changed towels—floors were never swept. A food stain on my son's sheet from day two remained on the bed for the entire two weeks. The maid service felt a bit heavy-handed coming nearly every day, so we opted out most days as we did not see the point if they only made beds. The maids were mostly quite grumpy until our final day, maybe they wanted a tip. Additionally, their trolleys frequently blocked the narrow walkways, which made navigation very difficult for my wife on crutches and impossible in a wheelchair.
Breakfast Buffet
We opted for self-catering but decided to try the €12 breakfast buffet twice.
First visit: The hot traditional English options (bacon, etc.) were lukewarm at best, and Spanish bacon isn't quite the same as home.
Second visit: Much better! The hot food was actually hot.
Verdict: Excellent value for continental choices, unlimited hot/cold drinks, fruit, cereals, amazing pancakes, and fresh custom omelettes. If you strictly want a proper hot English fry-up, head to Woody’s round the corner.
Pool Area, Entertainment & Staff
The pool is brilliant, large, and allows floaties and balls (though they can get annoying at times). Daytime pool entertainment was fantastic—Sebastian and his partner were so friendly and excellent at their jobs. The pool bar staff were equally great. Nighttime entertainment felt a bit cliquey and underwhelming (mostly karaoke with only one outside show a week), which is a step down from the hypnotists and shows they had back in 2009.
Unfortunately, two main issues ruined our impression of the pool area:
Cleanliness: While rubbish is collected and sunbeds are lined up, I never saw the surrounding pool deck mopped or machine-cleaned during our entire stay, leaving the floor feeling dirty. Big Lumps of what i hope were melted chocolate around our loungers one day were still there 5 days later when we had the same spot. Yuk. And still there on our last day!!
Sunbed Policy & Lifeguard: Sunbeds are crammed uncomfortably close together. An inch apart. While there is a strict "no reserving" rule, it is enforced selectively. The lifeguard arrogantly removed our towels while my 15-year-old was in the pool and I had briefly stepped away for 40 minutes to help my disabled wife down to reception for her medication. Meanwhile, Spanish guests and favourites left towels unattended from 8:30 am all day without issue. Reception was unhelpful when we complained, claiming it was at the lifeguard's discretion. Lifeguard was rude, unfriendly and unhelpful to us. He Patrols around like he is the pool police. Tells some people off leaving them confused whilst leaving others doing the same thing. Young lifeguard who covered his days off may as well have not been there, but at least he let people have fun and wasnt a jobsworth.
Final Verdict
Despite these issues, we had a very good family holiday. The hotel is lively, most staff are lovely, and the other guests were remarkably friendly and helpful towards my wife. We would still stay here again, but hopefully, management addresses the room furnishings, housekeeping standards, and pool management. They need to address the lifeguard on his people skills. He also needs to be more disability aware. He greatly embarrassed my wife in front of other guests by making a seen when returning our towels. It is people like him that make guests not want to return. Luckily we can overlook this silly little man."
