Taking its name from the Guanche for ‘quiet water’, the sleepy resort of Arguineguin offers the chance to experience life in an authentic Canarian coastal town. This former fishing village is also still a working port, and fishing boats bob in the harbour while pretty, multicoloured buildings overlook the water. Arguineguin holidays centre around three beaches. The largest is Las Maranuelas, which has all the sunbeds and facilities you’ll need.
Playa de Arguineguin is quieter and has darker, volcanic sand, while Playa de la Lajilla is the most protected, with its wave-breakers creating a tranquil, shallow swimming spot that’s ideal for little ones and lazy lilo lounging. There are plenty of Canary Islanders still living locally, which means holidays to Arguineguin are great for discovering independent neighbourhood restaurants and cocktail bars, many of which stay open late. There’s also a lively music scene, so just kick back with a Canarian beer and enjoy.
