Vila Real de Santo António is the Algarve with a gentler, river-meets-sea rhythm. Start in Praça Marquês de Pombal, the town’s grand central square, then wander towards the marina and riverside for views across to Ayamonte. Beach days are close by, too. Praia de Santo António sits near the mouth of the Guadiana and forms part of a long sandy stretch towards Ria Formosa, with calm, warm waters and pine forest adding a lovely green backdrop.

Food is classic eastern Algarve: grilled fish, clams, octopus, cataplana, piri-piri chicken and plenty of crisp Portuguese wine. You’re also close to Castro Marim’s salt pans, Monte Gordo’s beach scene and boat trips on the Guadiana. Vila Real de Santo António is perfect if you want sunshine without the shoutiness. Beach in the morning, river stroll in the afternoon, seafood supper by night. Simple? Yes. Boring? Not a chance.
