Markets, mosaics and Moorish influence

Stunning landscapes, a thriving town with markets, music and museums, and one of the longest sandy beaches in Portugal: Lagos holidays have it all. Centred around a vibrant marina, this coastal resort is a hub for visitors to the western Algarve.

Admire the architecture of Lagos’ old town, which is now also filled with trendy bars and independent boutiques. For another perspective on Lagos life, be sure to experience the town’s hectic fish market, where locals haggle over the morning’s catch and visitors can pick up locally made preserves and handcrafted souvenirs. For some history, swing by the the Castelo dos Governadores and the Santo António church, among many other monuments to the town’s past that can be visited.

Of course, no holidays to Lagos are complete without some serious beach time, and the western Algarve offers a peerless selection of sandy stretches – all you need to do is come and find your favourite.

Your Loulé questions, answered

Spring and autumn win the prize here. April to June or September to October give you sunshine without the sweaty crowds, cheaper stays, and plenty of outdoor fun. Summer? Unless you love paying triple for a hotel and elbowing for beach space, maybe skip it. Winter’s mild and quiet – great for a cultural wander.
Think hearty Portuguese classics with a side of Mediterranean sunshine. From bifana pork sandwiches at the market to slow lunches at family-run spots like A Tia Bia, you’ll never go hungry. Sweet tooth? Order almond and fig sweets or the obligatory pastel de nata. Wash it all down with local wine or a strong café.
Loulé throws some of the Algarve’s best parties. Carnival in February is full of costumes and parades, Noite Branca in August is a giant all-white street rave, and religious festivals like Festa da Mãe Soberana keep the traditions alive. Basically: whenever you come, check the calendar, odds are something’s on.
