Beach bliss in a tranquil seaside village
The low-lying seaside village of Murta Maria is in the northeastern part of Sardinia. It’s a small, peaceful place that is ideal for an island retreat. If you’re heading to Sardinia for vast stretches of sand and crystal-clear waters, Murta Maria is bound to deliver.
The hardest decision will be which beach to try first. Spiaggia Marina Maria is one of the closest to the village, and the long sandy beach curls into the Tyrrhenian Sea like a slender finger with the water on both sides. If you hire a car, you could get to Spiaggia Cuncheddi, a 20-minute journey out of town, but the drive is rewarded with fine sands and turquoise waters. Then again, there’s Porto Istana, where you’ll get a marvellous view of Isola Tavolara from the golden shores. If you feel inspired to visit this dramatic-looking isle, go with your instincts – it makes a fabulous day trip.
Murta Maria is near Olbia, where you’ll fly into, making it easily accessible if you don’t fancy a long transfer once you’ve touched down. Olbia is also an excellent place to seek out a wider selection of cafes and wine bars, and if you visit on a Tuesday or Saturday, there’s a street market to peruse. And before anything gets too lively, you can retreat to lovely Murta Maria.
