"This hotel is nicely kept. The rooms are fairly basic, but cleaned regularly. The grounds are well-kept and the pool area is lovely. The beach (sunbeds only available to Neilson hotel guests) is a five minute walk and the sand and sea are beautiful and fairly unspoilt. No beach front bars and it is backed by a lagoon that seems to be home to wading birds etc. The price we paid, however, compared poorly to other holidays we have been on on Greek islands. So the hotel and immediate surroundings are nice, but (on balance) not able to justify the higher price tag. The reception shuts early unless you've booked dinner from a pretty basic menu. The whole place is, however, very peaceful.
Now for the not so good... there's nothing else there! The nearest other restaurant is a 15 min walk away (that ends with a steep ramp up in the road). It is a lovely place, but you arrive hot and bothered. The next nearest are, respectively, 15 mins and 30 mins (one-way) away - and not particularly excellent. The nearest shops are an hour's round trip on foot. And the local supermarket and Despar in Tanaunella ARE THE ONLY SHOPS even within this walking distance. The free bus service (Budoni Marebus) was the only thing that made our holiday possible on a practical level. But this only runs four times a day and once in the early hours of the morning. A taxi back from Budoni (if you can find one) is 20-30 Euros. We actually ended up being driven home by a family member of a waitress of one of Budoni's restaurants.
So it is pretty much an essential that you rent a car (adding significant expense). And you need to do this in advance because the only firms that won't charge you 85 Euros a day are those that you pick up from and return to the airport.
So, in summary. This hotel would be an excellent practical launch pad to explore NE Sardinia by car. If you are after a beach and pool holiday that doesn't require a car, I would look elsewhere. This is not just a criticism of Cala Di Mirto. The Neilson place next door is bigger with all the things that entails. But if you want to eat out, you are limited in exactly the same way. We have to hold our hands up - we didn't do the research we should have done. However it was sold as a package to us by TUI and none of this was made clear."
