Village pace by the bay
Sitting on Mirabello Bay with a postcard view of Spinalonga Island, Plaka is where Crete hits pause. Think stone lanes, bobbing fishing boats, pebbly coves and long, lazy lunches by the water. From here, hop a tiny boat to explore Spinalonga’s Venetian fortress, wander Elounda’s chic promenade, or road-trip to Agios Nikolaos for lakeside cafés and boutique browsing. Snorkelling is superb on calm days, and sunset is a nightly show.
Back in the village, life revolves around the seafront. Tuck into grilled octopus, dakos and just-caught fish at family tavernas, then sip a raki nightcap under fairy lights. Beaches are small and serene, with clear water and handy sunbed spots; pack water shoes for pebbles. You’ll find mini-markets, ATMs, car hire and boat kiosks along the shore, plus friendly locals who’ll happily point you towards hidden coves.
Daytime plans are delightfully simple: swim, read, repeat. When adventure calls, hike the coastal path towards Elounda, kayak the bay, or head inland to traditional villages and olive mills. Evenings are for unhurried dining and that gentle sea breeze. Plaka is effortless Greece – low-key, lovely, and perfectly placed for exploring Crete’s sparkling northeast.
