"I recently stayed at Mama Shelter Paris La Défense and overall came away very impressed. It manages to combine a fun, energetic atmosphere with genuinely comfortable rooms and surprisingly good facilities.
The location worked well for me. The hotel is only a few minutes’ walk from Metro Line 1, which takes you directly into central Paris, including stops for the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre. In the other direction, La Défense and the Grande Arche are either one stop away or comfortably walkable. There is also a large Westfield shopping centre there with plenty of shops and dining options.
That said, the immediate area around the hotel lacks a little charm. It is very business district orientated, and there are not really any local cafés, terraces or small Parisian restaurants directly outside the hotel to enjoy in the evenings.
The hotel itself is where things become much more interesting. Mama Shelter fully embraces its quirky and eclectic identity, and the atmosphere throughout feels lively and social rather than corporate. The reception area has several comfortable seating spaces, alongside the pinball machines and table football that have become synonymous with the brand. The staff were also consistently welcoming, friendly and efficient during my stay.
The hotel benefits from several food and drink options on site, including an American diner-style restaurant and a sports bar, both of which had a genuinely good atmosphere. The real highlight though is the rooftop restaurant and bar on the 14th floor, which also serves breakfast. The panoramic views across Paris towards the Eiffel Tower are excellent, especially at night, and the rooftop transforms into more of a lounge and semi-club atmosphere later in the evening with DJs and music. Because of this, I would avoid staying directly underneath it. Even on the 9th floor, I could still hear the bass late into the night.
My room was a standard category room with a distant but still very visible Eiffel Tower view. The room itself was compact, but extremely comfortable and cleverly designed. The large bed was absolutely the centrepiece and honestly gave me one of the best nights of sleep I have had in a hotel for quite some time, despite technically being two singles pushed together.
There is not really a seating area in the room beyond a stool at the desk, which is probably the main compromise due to the room size. However, the room still comes well equipped with a mini fridge, Nespresso machine, safe and open wardrobe space. The bathroom was excellent, featuring a large walk-in rain shower and modern finishes throughout.
Technology and entertainment were also a strong point. The large TV opposite the bed had a surprisingly extensive range of channels, alongside free on-demand movies, which was a nice touch.
Mama Shelter also leans into its more playful and slightly provocative side. Depending on your taste, this will either add character or feel unnecessary. Things like the masks on the bedside lamps, mirrors above the bed and complimentary adult movies certainly give the hotel a cheekier personality.
Overall, this is a very modern, stylish and well-executed hotel with excellent amenities, great atmosphere and genuinely comfortable rooms. The only thing preventing it from feeling like a true Parisian neighbourhood stay is the surrounding area itself, which feels more functional than charming. Still, I would happily stay again."
