The Venice of the Red Sea

Head north from Hurghada along the east coast of Egypt and you’ll find El Gouna – a collection of small islands connected by a network of canals and lagoons. A word on sustainability

When it comes to being eco-friendly, El Gouna’s in a league of its own. The first resort town in the Middle East to receive a Green-Star certificate, El Gouna also boasts the UN Global Green Town Award among its many accolades.

El Gouna’s many eco highlights includes using 100% of its waste water for irrigation, while 85% of its land waste is either reused and recycled. What’s more, a whopping 20% of the resort town’s energy is produced by a solar plant (much higher than the national average).

Food is a big deal, yet 40% of it comes from the main farm and its on-site fish lagoons. From the use of more eco-friendly modes of transport such as electric tuk-tuks and shuttle boats, to its commitment to empowering local communities through green initiatives, El Gouna is a gold standard in how to approach sustainability.

Hit the sand
There’s six miles of beach to play with here. Dip your toes in the waters of the Red Sea or simply lay on the powdery-soft sand – it’s up to you. Or why not unleash your inner adventurer? Hop on a boat trip and head out into the sea or explore the desert that stretches inland. Either way you’re sure to find something spectacular.
Cultural pursuits
El Gouna may be an ultra-modern resort but there’s still plenty of cultural and historical treasures to uncover. The Conference Centre is home to the annual El Gouna Film Festival, amongst other major events, while day trips to Luxor, where you can see such unforgettable sights as the Valley of Kings, are easy to arrange.
Great golfing
Keen golfers are going to love El Gouna. You’ll find not one, but two, championship courses here – Ancient Sands and El Gouna Golf Club. Both cater to all levels and feature scenic views of the Red Sea mountains and lagoons. Staying at a hotel participating in El Gouna's Dine Around Scheme? Five-star guests get access to other buffet restaurants in the programme, as well as £200 per person to spend at the hotels' à la carte eateries. Four-star guests, meanwhile, can enjoy the buffets at other four-star properties and £200 per person for the à la cartes (please note: drinks are not included, number of visits to participating restaurants depends on the length of your stay).
