Happy Hotel Kalkan

"We visited Kalkan and stayed at Happy hotel for 1 week on 16th Sept. The hotel is at the Kalamar Bay end of Kalkan with stunning views from the pool and a good few restaurants nearby, especially House bar and kitchen literally just down the road ( down a steep hill which is a killer coming back up ) The hotel is very typical Turkish with dark furniture and dark floor tiles. We had room 213 with partial sea view and balcony with small table and chairs. We had no hot water from the shower or tap for the first 2 days. We reported it at reception and was told it’s because we’ve had no sunshine. I’ve stayed in Turkey many, many times and never had that problem. Room cleaned daily although floor was never swept and bathroom sink and sides not wiped, seemed we just got bed change, bin empty and towels changed. No waste bin in the room so everything went in the small bathroom bin. You are not allowed to take food or drink from outside into the hotel or you are charged at the going rate for doing so. Breakfast we felt was very basic so we only ate once there and walked down to House for a beautiful breakfast every morning. We didn’t eat any other meals at the hotel. Pool was nice and clean and never had a problem getting a lounger which were very comfy but there were towelling coverings on them and quite a few we found very stained. Staff were very helpful and friendly, they spoke little English some of them however always had a smile on their faces. Note there is no lift and we had 72 steps to climb to our room so it might be difficult with mobility issues. Guests we spoke to said they come every year sometimes 2/3 times and love it, unfortunately we didn’t, it was too dated, breakfast not great, cleaning standards of room not great and there seemed to be furniture left outside communal areas ( a cot, a sofa and a chair with stained pillows thrown on outside our room) To top it all I think I had my Rayban sunglasses taken out if the room, I presumed my husband had put them in his case when he packed but on the way home he said he hadn’t. My fault for not checking before we left but never the less they must have gone from the room as they were on the side in the room all week in the case and as I wear 2 pairs on holiday I didn’t realise they’d gone. All in all we love Kalkan and loved staying at that end this time but not this hotel for us."

"2nd visit here and I can say I have never liked somewhere so much I’d go twice! Not a great lover of busy places and with a kid in the summer holidays unless you want to spend a fortune everywhere is packed. I love how there are no sunbed wars or loud music at the pool and you can just relax. The staff are lovely and friendly - Hasan and Yaren always asking if you would like anything and the bar is very reasonably priced. For my summer holiday I would definitely be back again. My only dislike is the smoking but this is a culture thing that’s not quite changed I guess."
