Top 5 Water Safety Tips

Pause before taking the plunge: Remember, every pool is different, so even if you’re a more confident swimmer, you should always check for safety signs, scope the depth, check for free swim aids like floats, and have a quick scan for any “no-go” zones.  Not sure about something? Ask a lifeguard or hotel staff.

Don’t swim solo: Buddy up where you can! Doesn’t’ matter if it’s your mum, mate, or partner - just make sure someone’s with you in the pool or spotting from the side.

Build water confidence: Don’t let fear takeover. Get comfortable in the water by gradually submerging yourself – starting with legs, then body – then up to chest – then try getting your face wet! Try first in shallow water with nearby supervision.

If in doubt, float it out: If things start to go wobbly in the water, try to stay calm and get into a ‘float’ position. Tilt your head back, submerging it in water to your ears, and move your hands and legs to help you float. Call for help in this position if you need to.

Always remember to breathe: Controlled breathing will not only help manage anxiety in the water but keep you calm so you won’t tire yourself out.
