Swish hillside hotel

There’s an air of sophistication at the adults-only Melia Jardines del Teide, a five-star retreat nestled in beautifully landscaped gardens and flaunting views of the Atlantic Ocean. This terracotta-hued property is staggered across a hillside. It’s got an ultra-tropical outdoor scene, with suntrap terraces cloaked in palm trees and daybeds, and three lagoon-like pools criss-crossed by bridges. You can walk to the golden sands of El Duque beach in around 10 minutes from here.

Grab the chance to take time out at the spa – a Zen-inducing space with a long list of treatments on offer. The hotel entertainment programme, meanwhile, runs day and night, ticking off shows, team tournaments and live music. When it comes to dining, there’s plenty of choice. Mosaico serves a huge variety of international dishes, which are laid out buffet-style, and show cooking stations let you watch the chefs at work. Casa Nostra is an à la carte eatery specialising in Italian fare, while Palapa does a great line in light bites like salads and sandwiches.

Find out more about Costa Adeje

Costa Adeje hugs the shoreline on Tenerife’s south-west coast. It’s fronted by golden beaches and backed by mountains with peaks so sky-high they get lost in the clouds. The whole place feels tropical, with palm trees, shrubs and blooms blanketing the entire resort. Thanks to its high-end hotels, fine dining restaurants and designer shopping scene, this is Tenerife’s most upmarket resort. Holidays to Costa Adeje tend to revolve around the beach and hotel spas by day, and involve good meals and cocktails with live music after dark. In areas like Playa del Duque, expect mood-lit restaurants overlooking the beach, and just a couple of low-key bars. Menus in these parts are pricier than the rest of the island, but the food is top-notch. Expect a heavy seafood influence, with local specialities like Galician octopus tempting tastebuds.
