"We have recently returned from a wonderful week at Inturotel Cala Azul, and I have no hesitation in giving this hotel a 5-star TA rating.
Room:
We stayed in a first-floor family pool-view apartment in Block D and were delighted with it. The apartment consisted of two rooms and provided plenty of space for our family of four. Our daughters (aged 4 and 7) slept comfortably on the twin sofa beds in the lounge area, while my husband and I had a separate bedroom.
The apartment included a fridge/freezer and a small kitchen area with a table, which was perfect for preparing our own lunches. Storage was excellent, with plenty of hanging space in the wardrobes.
The balcony was spacious and pleasant, with three chairs, a table and a built-in drying rack. We did notice quite a few ants on the balcony, although thankfully they never came into the apartment. It's something the hotel should address, but it didn't impact our holiday.
Dining:
We stayed on a half-board basis and were extremely impressed by the quality of the food. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a terrace overlooking the pool and sea views in the distance. Having breakfast in the sunshine each morning was a lovely way to start the day.
Breakfast offered an excellent selection, including eggs, omelettes, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, cereals, porridge, fresh bread, pastries and plenty of fruit. Evening meals were equally impressive, with varied buffet options and fresh meat and fish cooked on the grill each night.
As a vegetarian, I always found plenty to enjoy, particularly the vegetarian paella, pasta dishes, grilled vegetables and the excellent salad bar.
Our daughters are dairy- and soya-intolerant, and we found food labelling clear and helpful throughout our stay. They especially enjoyed trying different grilled fish and meats, including tuna, swordfish, calamari and pork. The only area that could be improved was the dessert selection for guests with dietary restrictions. A dairy-free sorbet option alongside the ice cream would have been very welcomed by our girls!
My one significant criticism concerns drinks at dinner. On the half-board package, drinks are included at breakfast but not in the evening. While I completely understand the hotel's desire to sell drinks, we often felt uncomfortable declining them. On several occasions, waiting staff became noticeably less friendly after we politely said we didn't wish to order drinks and grabbed the glasses off the table.
As a family travelling on a budget, we preferred to buy drinks later in the evening while our girls enjoyed the mini disco. This should be a choice guests can make without feeling pressured. I hope management addresses this issue, as it was the only aspect of our stay that felt disappointing.
We also found drinks and snacks at the hotel quite expensive, so we regularly used the Spar supermarket directly outside the hotel for water, iced tea, local beers and ice lollies, which helped keep costs down.
Hotel Grounds and Facilities:
The hotel grounds are absolutely beautiful, with immaculate gardens and spotless public areas. The pool area was lovely, although we felt more umbrellas are needed. We often had to leave due to zero shade but just went to the beach instead where we could use our own umbrella.
The hotel’s sea platform was amazing. We loved swimming and jumping into the sea, and our eldest daughter even tried snorkelling for the first time there. We brought our own paddleboard and explored nearby coves, although there is also a watersports centre close by offering paddleboards, kayaks, windsurfing equipment and snorkelling gear at reasonable prices.
Location:
The location is fantastic. The beaches Cala Esmeralda and Cala Ferrera are both around a five-minute walk away and are absolutely stunning. The edge of Cala d'Or town is right beside the hotel, while the marina is around a 25-minute walk away.
For families, the Ting-Ting tourist train is a great alternative to walking and was a huge hit with our children.
Mini Club and Mini Disco:
The Mini Club team genuinely made our holiday.
This was the first holiday where both of our daughters were old enough to attend a kids' club, and it transformed our experience. The club runs from 10:30am until 2:00pm, giving parents a valuable few hours to relax.
Sandra and Pablo were exceptional. Warm, enthusiastic and genuinely brilliant with children, they immediately made our daughters feel welcome. Activities included arts and crafts, bracelet making, baking, nature walks, singing and dancing, with different themed programmes each day.
The girls were excited to attend every morning and loved checking the club door each evening to see the next day's theme. The registration process was straightforward, and staff always checked our contact details at drop-off, which gave us peace of mind.
Thanks to the Mini Club, my husband and I were able to enjoy some quality time together—walking to the marina, paddleboarding, snorkelling and simply relaxing with a coffee. It made a huge difference to our holiday.
Sandra and Pablo, thank you for everything. Chiara especially still talks about you both!
Evening Entertainment:
Before booking, I specifically looked for hotels with a mini disco. Although it takes place at the neighbouring sister hotel, it's literally just across a quiet road and feels like part of the same complex.
The outdoor entertainment area is excellent, with plenty of seating, a bar and a stage. The mini disco, led by the entertainment team, was a highlight of every weekday evening. Our daughters loved dancing while we enjoyed relaxing with a drink and soaking up the atmosphere.
The evening shows were also excellent. During our stay we watched a magic show, an acrobatics performance and a Lion King-themed production by the entertainment team. The quality was genuinely impressive and enjoyable for adults as well as children.
If you're considering Inturotel Cala Azul for a family holiday, I would definitely recommend it. The excellent location, superb food, fantastic facilities and outstanding children's entertainment made this our best family holiday to date!"
