"We stayed here in the room with a terrace for three nights a week and a half ago and then returned after spending a week in Malta for three more nights. The first three night were wonderful. The second three nights have been horrible. While we did enjoy the terrace for our first three nights despite the slight smell of smoke of the public interior courtyard, our last visit is deplorable. There were five people in the public courtyard smoking cigars and cigarettes one another to the point that we had to close our doors to the terrace. And even at that, our room reeked of smoke. When I contact reception to see what could be done about the smell of smoke in our room, she said that nothing can be done because the government allows smoking in hotels. I asked to speak to a manager and she said the manager wasn’t available for three more days, until Monday. So in the meantime our clothes and room sticks. In essence, we paid for a room with a terrace that we can’t use. I know that smoking is tolerated in Europe, and we try hard to be tolerant but there is a time when too much is too much. So, if you are thinking about staying at Catalonia Las Cortes, and it does have many wonderful positive attributes, think twice if you are sensitive to cigar and cigarette smoke that is permitted in public area and some rooms ."

"Staff was very friendly and helpful, rooms clean and comfortable. There are several Catalonia's to choose from (we passed several of them while walking around) and I sincerely believe this one has the best location as it is located on a quieter street. 12 minute walk to the art museums, 20 minute walk to the royal palace. Lots of choices for lunch and dinner near by. Breakfast was good and had good choices. Concierge ordered our airport taxi, and he was ready and waiting for us on time. We highly recommend staying here if you are going to Madrid."
