Royal Hideaway Sancti Petri

You might not instantly picture a Spanish coastal town if you hear of a place characterised by mudflats and marshes, forested plains and ancient cork oak groves. But you’ll find all this terrain around Chiclana de la Frontera in gorgeous Andalucía, which lies a little south of Cádiz – a truly ancient, 5,000-year-old city with charming streets, sea views, and fresh fish taverns.

A holiday to Chiclana de la Frontera could simply revolve around four things: the wide sands of La Barrosa Beach, plenty of tapas, a little (or a lot of) flamenco, and the odd glass or two of the local sherry. If you’re looking for relaxing days followed by lively nights, you’re in luck. There’s a string of chiringuitos and upscale beach clubs along the promenade and at Sancti Petri Beach, with flamenco artists and DJs playing sets so you can dance till dawn.
