Stylish retreat opposite the Guggenheim Museum
The Gran Hotel Domine is located right in the centre of Bilbao, next to institutions like the Museum of Fine Arts and the Maritime Museum, and a short walk from the shops and boutiques of the Ensanche. But it’s the stunning views of the Guggenheim Museum that really make this retreat standout.
The hotel itself is appropriately chic and modern, given its location. The walls are adorned with striking works of art and the atrium is a dramatic contemporary space, with Javier Mariscal’s stone cypress sculpture rising through it. If you’re in town to enjoy Bilbao’s famous culinary scene, you’ll find the Gran Hotel Domine is an excellent starting point, with Sasoi restaurant serving a menu of Basque delights, and La Cafe offering more informal – but no less delicious – plates. What better way could there be to start your day than with breakfast up on the roof terrace overlooking the Guggenheim?
Take a load off your mind in the Wellness Centre, where you can detox in the sauna and Turkish bath, and indulge yourself in a professional massage from one of the hotel’s skilled body therapists. With a range of treatments available, you’ll leave feeling relaxed and ready to carry on your Bilbao adventure.
The contemporary stylings carry through into the bedrooms, with high end furnishings, gorgeous artworks and a luxury bed with an irresistibly comfy mattress. Pamper yourself in the marble bathroom with a range of skincare products from The White Company. Also included, you’ll have access to high-speed Wi-Fi, an HDTV with international channels, air-conditioning and a Nespresso machine for making coffee first thing.

What Gran Hotel Domine has to offer
Guggenheim Museum
Designed by world-famous architect Frank Gehry, this museum has become an iconic symbol of modern art and architecture. The titanium-clad structure is unlike any other building, dominating its position on the riverfront. And while its rippling exterior is a photographer’s dream, what’s inside is no less spectacular, with a diverse collection of contemporary artwork and prestigious exhibitions that regularly draw international crowds. You can see it from the comfort of the hotel and it’s only a two-minute walk to have a look inside.
La Ribera Market
Beside the Nervión River, behind a gorgeous art deco facade, you’ll find Europe’s largest covered market. Step inside to discover a maze of stalls selling fresh produce, meats, fish and Basque delicacies. When you’re done shopping, head upstairs to one of the many eateries and bars serving menus created from the goods that are sold below. A scenic 25-minute walk along the river, or 15-minute journey by public transport, will get you there.
Discover pintxos
Bilbao is a foodie’s dream, home to several world-famous restaurants. But if you want to dine like a local, then you’ll want to acquaint yourself with pintxos – little bites of heaven served on sticks, often alongside a glass of wine. These snack-sized dishes come in all shapes and sizes and the best way to enjoy them is by moving from bar to bar, sampling the different delicacies on offer. You can even hire a local guide to show you all the best spots.
