Explore the authentic Port wine cellars

Pitched up on the outskirts of the city, the Mercure Porto Gaia Hotel is tucked away from the bustling inner city streets, but thanks to nearby transport links, you can be exploring the sights in no time.

The best way to get in and out of the city centre from here is the bus, and there’s a stop just around the corner. If you like historical churches, you’re in luck, this place has got more than its fair share of them. Between the Porto Cathedral, the Igreja do Carmo, and the Church of Saint Ildefonso, you’ll have more than enough to keep you busy.

No visit to the Portuguese wine capital would be complete without a taste of the good stuff, and the hotel is handily just five minutes from the Port Wine Cellars. Take a guided tour and indulge in a tipple or two – it’d be rude not to. Back at the hotel you’ll find a restaurant that deals in traditional Portuguese cuisine served in a warm and inviting atmosphere, plus a cosy bar perfect for a nightcap. For a view of the city that’s hard to beat, meanwhile, head to Douro Marina as the sun starts to set.
