Jan Luyken Hotel Amsterdam

"Jan Luyken is an attractive property, beautifully designed and with some lovely communal spaces. The outdoor patio and lounge are particularly pleasant to return to after a day of sightseeing. A very nice touch is the complimentary selection of drinks and refreshments. It gives the hotel a warm, almost residential feel. Service, however, was rather mixed. Some members of staff were cheerful and engaging, while others came across as indifferent or somewhat robotic in their delivery. We also had a fairly significant mix-up at check-in, when we were allocated a room category below the one we had booked and we ended up in a very small room facing the road. What was initially manageable became increasingly noisy as the night went on, and it was particularly noticeable around 3am and later. This had a real impact on our sleep and, consequently, on our overall experience. So, while there is much to like about Jan Luyken, what could have been a lovely stay ended up being rather disappointing because of the room allocation, noise and inconsistency in service. We did receive compensation for the lapse in service and it was appreciated"

"A beautiful home away from home Jan Luyken is on a lovely tree-lined street in Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter, close to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Vondelpark. There are cafés, restaurants and shops nearby, making it a lovely base for exploring the city. The hotel felt very homely, with beautiful interior design. I was travelling on my own and felt comfortable throughout my stay. I chose a medium room with a little balcony, which was beautiful and very comfortable. Drinks were included in my stay, which was a lovely touch. There was also a complimentary laundry service for stays of more than six days. Most of the staff were absolutely wonderful and very welcoming. The only small thing was that one receptionist seemed a little disengaged and less welcoming than the rest of the team. A warmer approach would have made a difference, but this was a minor point in an otherwise beautiful stay. I would definitely return. A lovely home away from home."

"Very disappointing experience: the price-quality ratio is absolutely not correct. I had booked a room with a large window, but instead was placed in a dirty, dark attic room where we couldn't even look outside. The room was in bad condition with dirty walls, dust on the radiator, and unfinished surfaces; it felt more like a poorly maintained rendezvous hotel than a decent hotel. Furthermore, the noise pollution was enormous; you could hear everything from the neighbors and the doors opening and closing. The most frustrating thing was that the room we got was not the room we had booked, but the staff jokingly called it an "upgrade." When we complained about this, they didn't first look for a solution. The staff at the desk was even laughing and claimed that the hotel was fully booked, while I saw that several other guests were checked in after us. The only other option they offered was another room that also did not meet the booking conditions. Although the open bar is a nice feature, this in no way compensates for the bad experience of the room. It is simply unacceptable that a hotel charges such high prices without meeting the minimum expectations. I absolutely cannot recommend this hotel either."
