Intercontinental Amstel Amsterdam

"Already before we arrived, the hotel was in contact with us to check any special requests we would have and the timing of our arrival. Our family of 4 had booked two rooms and as we arrived already in the morning, we were handed one room early on which was nice. Hotel is well known to us, as we have visited with family and as a couple a number of times in the past, always enjoying it a lot. So off we went to spend the day in Amsterdam, as hotel is located so close to the very center. Amsterdam is as a city very walkable, and we were lucky with the weather as well. After long day of walking and shopping, we returned to hotel, took a quick dip in the pool and started evening in the bar, before going to dine in the city. Generally about the experience: The rooms were in perfect condition, clean and well equipped. In the mornings, we did sports in the gym and enjoyed an excellent breakfast served at the table. We enjoyed the excellent service provided by the whole staff and especially the fun team in the bar. The whole visit was perfect for us, and we will definitely be back in future."

"The hotel itself has several strong points. The location is excellent, the dining was genuinely very good, and the property itself is beautiful. Those are the reasons I am giving two stars. I should also make it clear that, apart from the Front Office Manager, the other front desk staff were friendly, helpful, and pleasant to deal with. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment of the entire stay was the Front Office Manager. Throughout our communication, her approach felt highly transactional and, at times, rather status-conscious and commercially minded. When concerns were raised, the focus seemed to be more on defending the hotel’s position, shifting responsibility, and explaining why certain issues were not the hotel’s responsibility, rather than genuinely understanding the guest’s perspective and trying to resolve the situation. To avoid any misunderstanding, these concerns were raised during the stay, including in person with management. The issue was not that the hotel was unaware of them or had no opportunity to respond. The problem was that those discussions ultimately provided very little meaningful help or resolution. What was equally disappointing was the communication style. Many of the responses felt polite on the surface, but formulaic, impersonal, and lacking in warmth or substance, almost as if they had come from a standard customer-service template rather than from a manager who had taken the time to understand the situation. For a hotel of this level, I expected much better judgment, empathy, ownership, and communication from management. This was especially unfortunate because the other front desk staff actually left a positive impression and were willing to help, which made the contrast with the Front Office Manager even more noticeable. To be fair, the hotel is beautiful, the location is excellent, the food was very good, and many of the other staff members deserve credit. However, for me, the Front Office Manager was by far the weakest part of the experience and ultimately brought the overall stay down to two stars. More regrettably, this style of management and communication not only undermines the value associated with the InterContinental brand, but also detracts from the character and historical significance of what is otherwise a truly remarkable property."

"We had a wonderful stay at the InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam. The staff were extremely attentive, warm, and friendly, and the overall level of service was excellent. We also really enjoyed the hotel’s restaurants, beautiful views, and atmosphere. We were kindly upgraded to a one-bedroom accommodation with fantastic views, which made the stay even more special. The main downside was the air conditioning. Unfortunately, the AC was not functioning properly throughout our three-night stay. We moved rooms once, and in the second room the staff kindly provided us with a fan, which we appreciated, but the AC remained the main issue during our stay. The location is also slightly away from the very center of Amsterdam, although the hotel itself has such a beautiful setting that this was not a major concern for us. Overall, despite the AC issue, our experience was excellent and memorable, and we genuinely enjoyed our stay."
