Raising the Bar on beach breaks
Now this is a destination that raises the bar for easygoing escapes. Bar is a sunny coastal town on Montenegro’s south coast, tucked between the Adriatic Sea and shimmering Lake Skadar – so you get your beaches and big mountain views in one hit. Down by the seafront, life revolves around the long promenade: think pebble beaches, palm trees, cafés and sunset strolls with an ice cream or cold beer in hand. Further inland, Stari Bar (Old Bar) waits on a hill below Mount Rumija – a ruined, atmospheric citadel with stone lanes, viewpoints and plenty of cats, all wrapped in olive groves.
Bar’s also a great base for having little adventures. Spend a day exploring King Nikola’s seafront palace, wander the marina, or hop along the coast to quieter coves and neighbouring resorts. If you love to get amongst the great outdoors, you can go inland to Lake Skadar National Park for boat trips, bird spotting and some proper “wow” scenery.
Food-wise, expect relaxed cafés, grill restaurants and simple seafood spots, all sensibly priced and big on portions. Evenings are all about gentle promenades, sea breezes and finding your favourite beachfront bar in Bar. It’s relaxed, great value and still cool – the kind of place that sets the bar for future holidays higher.
