Port town with a Venetian quarter
Livorno holidays introduce one of Tuscany’s lesser-known treasures. Livorno has some wonderful Renaissance canals – it became known as ‘New Venice’ when the canals were built by the all-powerful Medici family in the 16th century – and a superb position looking out over the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The city will not only give you a great experience of Tuscany and its people, but also treat you to some of the region’s best seafood. The city’s canals run from the harbour to the impressive New Fortress in the centre, with the ‘Royal Ditch’ passing beneath the huge Piazza della Repubblica, and on to the Old Fortress.
The historic centre dates largely from the 18th and 19th centuries, with some splendid piazzas and excellent restaurants. Holidays to Livorno reveal a different side to Tuscany – a melting pot of a city that will win your heart with its friendly locals, charming authenticity and fascinating history.
